I bought the extra large for my slightly overweight labrador and it was a good fit. He appears very comfortable in it. Easy to fasten round the dog, and to the seat belt. Having tried it in the back seat, with a 3 point seatbelt, it would have kept him in the back of the car (for me, the point) but he had a lot of leeway when it came to where he would sit - the ability to loll over onto the person sitting next to him, for instance. I wouldn't try it in the front, because it wouldn't restrain him enough for me to drive, which is why I have only given it 4 stars rather than 5. I like the ability to use the harness with a lead, meaning you don't have to take the harness off if the dog gets out of the car, and he can be put back in just as easily. I've kept the harness for those times when he has to travel in alternative transport to normal - he'll stay behind the dog guard in my car!
Bought this harness for my boxer, after reading other reviews decided to go for X-Large, although the product description states that the large size is suitable for the boxer breed. My boxer is not a particularly big boy but very glad I went for the extra large, it fits perfectly,is comfortable and the harness clip fits in to my new ford fiesta seatbelt fixtures. Good quality product and would definitely recommend if you want your dog to travel safely and comfortably on the back seat. The only downside is that we could have done with better instructions on how to fit it on to the dog, takes a bit of getting used to, not as straight forward as it looks. Overall though very pleased.
