Halfway to Greatness 12 Jun 2008
Format:Audio CD
`Car Button Cloth' The Lemonheads's set from 1996, seems to be a perfect encapsulation of main man Evan Dando's shambolic talent. The first five or six songs on this record are brilliant: hugely melodic, slacker indie-pop numbers like `If I Could Talk I'd Tell You' with its chiming guitar line, the sub-Dinosaur Jr rock of `Break Me' and the infectiously catchy `Hospital' are tossed off seemingly with ease. I also love the wryly amusing `Outdoor Type' about the little fibs one tells to try to impress a new girlfriend.

These tracks race by leave a big smile on your face, but after `Losing My Mind' with its more experimental air and mumbled vocals the quality does drop sharply. `Something's Missing', `Tenderfoot' and the tedious closing instrumental `Secular Rockulidge' are uninspired indie-thrash whilst `Knoxville Girl' is an unaffecting pseudo-country number. `6ix' is quite amusing, inspired as it is by the film `Se7en' but overall the second half of the record is disappointing.

`It's A Shame About Ray' remains the band's most consistently excellent record but this CD has enough bright moments to make it worth having.

His songs are induced by jaded tales of country heartbreak, reen leaves and finishing your Paella. Assisted by regular contributors Eugene Kelley (Vaselines) and Tom Morgan (of Australian band Smudge) Dando has constructed such a well varied yet cohesive slab of 13 song precision. Throughout "Car Button Cloth" Dando displays the trademark Lemonheads melody, pedal steel, light rock and vocal whispers. Prime cuts include single "If I could talk I'd tell you", "Tenderfoot", "The outdoor type" and "Hospital". Cant wait for that solo album.

The Lemonheads made it big in 1992 with 'It's a Shame About Ray'is the Lemonheads just Evan Dando? He has had a log haul with drugs now does he come out the other side in tact. The song you would have heard on the radio is 'It's All True' which makes you tap your toes. Evan shows on this album that he can still play and write songs with the best of them, he is a excellent song writer and sadly lazy, as we would all like to hear from him more often. I think lyrically this is the best album this Boston band has yet offered, it may not be as commercial but is full of quality.
