5.0 out of 5 stars More magic from Ms Jenkins! 1 Oct 2010
By C. Y. Davidson VINE™ VOICE
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
When Dominic LeVeq is left out of his father's will by his unscrupulous stepmother and stepbrother because he is the son of his White father's beloved black mistress, and not his hated wife. Sharing a love of the sea, after his father's death he became a pirate plundering ships carrying gold and with an intolerance for the evils of slavery, attacking slave ships and freeing their living cargo. When his ship, `Marie' attacks a British frigate, amongst the gold onboard are spoilt southern belle, Violet Sullivan, her brother Victor, and Violet's personal property; Clare Sullivan, stolen as a child by slavers and brought to America's south. Dominic is shocked that given the option of regaining her freedom that the lovely Clare would rather remain with the devil she knows than willingly come with him. So he throws her over his shoulder and drags her kicking and cursing him in three different languages on board his ship. To the amusement of his crew; bets are placed on how soon Clare will fall into Dominic's bed. But they all warm to her and soon both the crew and Dominic realise that Clare is a lady and no one's fool. Her `owner' educated her as a jest and was chagrined to find that her property was more able and intelligent than she was. When Dominic finds out why Clare is desperate to return to Savannah even after having tasted freedom, he is intrigued and determined to help her. But Clare has good reason to not want to put her trust in a pirate, charming and handsome as he may be.

This book is a prequel to the other novels featuring members of the LeVeq family and is set during the American civil war and features on the role of blacks during that period of history. I loved this book and didn't want it to end.
My only small annoyance was with the artist who should have exchanged the skin tones and hair of the people on the cover to reflect the description given by the author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Captivated 1 Oct 2009
By Cathy D. Atchison - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Beverly Jenkins new release, Captured, has completely capitivated my heart. This book is a thrill a minute and I am still riding high after having read it. In this book Ms. Jenkins returns us to the House of LeVeq. Only this time, she takes us where it all began. The book starts off with a bang when Clare is captured by the pirate, Dominic LeVeq. Ms. Jenkins is one of the best writers I have read and especially when it comes to her ability to make you feel like you are actually experiencing what is happening in her books. She is very descriptive of everything: the period, the clothes, the ships, life on the ship, the life of a slave, and all those personalities. And sometimes, it can be ever so subtle, but you get the point. The scenes read like a movie, they are so visual. And let's not forget about Clare and Dominic. I absolutely adored their love story. If you are looking for a book that has history, romance, adventure, action, and/or suspense, this book has it all. Ms. Jenkins has done it again, another hit!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Caught up! 29 Oct 2009
By A. Rolle - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Dominic LeVeq a lovechild of a Frenchman and a slave. When Dominic's father dies his half brother Eduard and his stepmom conspired to cheat him out of his inheritance. Eduard wants to take all his father's workers and make them slaves, but Dominic can't have that he steals Ed's boat and races to save the 300 workers.

While Dominic has started a new life his main mission in life is to rescue as many slaves as possible. He and his crew take over a British frigate. On board he finds a beautiful slave by the name of Clare Sullivan. He steals Clare from her owners and take her to his Free Cuban island. Clare doesn't want to be free, because her children are still enslaved in Savannah.

Dominic makes Clare love him and soon she wants to stay, but not without her children and that's where the action begins. This was one of Beverly Jenkins' best books, you get a great history lesson, action, and romance. Great job Ms. Jenkins
