4.0 out of 5 stars A True Practical Guide 24 Jan 2012
By Jack Percival TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
With the Olympic Games quickly descending on us, there is little doubt we will see increasing quantity of varying quality books, games, toys and other memorabilia hitting our shelves. Fortunately, I am pleased to say that this book provides us with a gold medal winning performance for the amateur and professional photographer alike. Put together by Daily Mail Chief Sports Photographer Andy Hooper, he takes us through sport by sport showing readers the best way they can capture the moment.

The images contained within the book go to demonstrate what fantastic opportunities exist in sport and particularly the Olympics to capture enthralling images. After a brief introduction detailing some background, equipment and basic information he goes into each sport, suggesting shutter speed settings, ideal lenses and what angles are best to capture the action. While the emphasis is more on DSLR cameras, advice is offered for those with more compact point and shoots as well as camera phones. The final section goes on to look at things that everyone should know including how to deal with low light conditions, legal issues or the camera equipment limitations to be imposed by some venues.

As a handbook this is well put together with a good mix of technical advice presented in a way that is accessible to the amateur. While some shots wouldn't be achievable without expensive equipment or getting impossibly close to the action this is recognised and dealt with appropriately. A true practical guide for photographers looking to produce fantastic pictures at the greatest show on earth.

4.0 out of 5 stars A book that combines theory with practice 17 May 2012
By Dr. D. E. Goldwater VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
This is really quite a nice book. It is a bit bigger than pocket sized so it would fit nicely into a rucksack.

I always like to see a practical guide written by someone who has experience and really knows their trade. The author, having been a daily newspaper sports photographer, has written this from the heart and oozes practical experience. The photos are all taken by the author and each documents how the photo was taken, which settings and speeds etc. This is really useful as it gives examples of the different settings.

The book is divided into different sports. Obviously, there is huge cross over in technique and I think this book is a really good practical guide, not only for sports photography but also for general every day photography. There are excellent back-to-basics theory explanations, so important to understand the craft of photography.

This book even goes into the legal aspects of photographing events like the olympics and together with the fact that the cover is in the olympic font with the olympic logo, I think this makes a really nice souvenir of the games - one which I will no doubt dip into for years to come.

There are better general photography books out there no doubt, but for its remit, this is an excellent book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not Just For The Olympics 10 April 2012
By Coincidence Vs Fate TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
I've only just recently progressed from a point and shoot, so at the moment I wouldn't even call myself an amateur photographer. I'm still getting to grips with ISO, aperatures and the like.

While some of the shots in here are obviously taken by photographers with many years experience and equipment beyond the reach of most of us, there are tips and details on how to take great photographs regardless of who you are, what equipment you have and the subject you are shooting.

Some of the guidance given here will really help while I'm taking photographs of my five-year-old tearing round the park for instance, so I found some of the advice invaluable and I could look at my Nikon at the same time as reading this book, trying to recreate settings, etc.

Don't be put off by the Olympics tie-in, read and enjoy the book for what it is; an invaluable help for amateurs and professionals alike.
