Amazon.co.uk Review

This substantial volume brings together six novels, all set in The Captain's Table, a bar where ships' captains from many worlds throughout history can gather to drink, talk and brawl. The price of the first round of drinks is always a story. And so each captain settles back and spins a yarn.

Captains Kirk and Sulu meet some unusual reptilian aliens in an intriguing adventure, while Picard goes undercover in search of a missing Starfleet officer and a legendary Cardassian treasure in a fast-moving tale. Sisko's brush with a mysterious race of invisible aliens, on the other hand, is slow and talky. The pace picks up again as Janeway describes her experiences as a deck-hand aboard the ship of a comparatively low-tech culture where, marooned, she has to work her way up from the bottom. Peter David's creation, Mackenzie Calhoun, relates his experiences as First Officer of the Grissom under the vengeful Captain Kenyon, and Christopher Pike searches for the origins of a species of space-faring whales.

Most of these adventures are well-written, with some excellent aliens, and their first-person narration gives a more intimate feel than most Star Trek novels. Weighing in at a hefty 1143 pages, it's very good value for money.--Elizabeth Sourbut

The Captains Table series is one which successfully encaptulates each of the major captains in the Star Trek universe. Beginning with Kirk and Sulu it chronicles a story which stretchs between the original Enterprise and the Excelsior right through to Captain Janeway and her exploits in the Delta Quadrant. And for an extra, a story chronicilling the adventures of Captain Pike on the Enterprise before Kirk.

The greatest successes of the series were the stories outlining that of Janeway and Calhoun. In this you really do get a look at what Janeway would have been like if she really were stranded in the Delta Quadrant with no Federation ideals to maintain. Her character is given sufficient scope to develop in ways not permitted by the run of the mill Voyager books - any review i do just now would not do it justice - best to read it yourself. Normally i would not read books featuring Calhoun of the New Frontier series, but this book has converted me. It shows a Captain who really questions the ideals of Starfleet, rather than the likes of Picard who usually just question the 'Prime Directive'.

The only downside of the series was that contributed by the Sisko story. It was very slow paced, far too many breaks in the main story that were caused by Sisko fascination with nachos and a rowdy Klingon. The story itself was rushed, leaving you questioning it. A story set in only one day, yet so much happens. As with so many of DS9 stories both in books, and the TV series - its a bit of a cop out.

5 outta 6 books were great, Kirk & Sulu and Picard's stories will wet your appatite, Janeway and Calhoun's stories will have you enthralled, and to cap that off a wee extra adventure from Captain Pike. As for the Sisko story, skip it if you want, its of little consequence and you aint missin much.

Sees ya.

Star Trek: The Captain's Table Omnibus is a wonderful compilation of some of the best Star Trek written to date! I originally read all six of the paperbacks and purchased this more as a collector's thing than anything else. All in all, the whole series is great and in good keeping with the principles and ethos of what "The Great Bird of the Galaxy" intended Star Trek to be. I do have to admit that it would be nice if one of the better trek authors was given the opportunity to write a seventh book with Captain Archer from "Enterprise." {ssintrepid}

I recently got this and was quite daunted by the length of the book. I love to read, and also love my sci-fi, but usually don't mix the two. However thought this would be worth a try. This is a story of a mysterious bar only open for captains that appears just when needed. There are stories from all the main Star Trek captains and a suprise Captain Pike story, so really spans most of the series apart from 'Enterprise'. These books are written in the first person narrative, so as each Captain is as individual as the authors, the differing styles between each book certainly add to that feel, and make it much easier to read (if you read 1,000 pages by the same author I think it would test anyones patience!).
Took me quite some time to get through, but it was worth it..... good addition to any Star Trek fans library
