Product Description

They were the Starfleet captains, the special men and one woman, who had the right stuff to claim the most powerful seat in sci-fi. STAR TREK is the most influential science fiction television series of all time. In the 44 years since its inception, Star Trek has spanned six series and 11 movies, indisputably paving the way for every science fiction series that has followed. At the center of it all stand the fearless captains of each STAR TREK generation: a class of iconic characters whose leadership and choices changed the course of their own universe forever.

4.0 out of 5 stars quite good, but with flaws 30 Dec 2012

This is a vanilla disc from the Biography channel. It runs to 90 minutes approx, and has been shown on the channel as a two hour program plus advertisments.

This is a programme obviously aimed as a thinly veiled two hour advert for the new Star Trek film directed by JJ Abrahms. focusing on the role of captains in the star trek universe legacy. Some interesting comments from Kate Mulgrew, very sparse actual footage from the series.

Most time seems to be devoted to the first Kirk, which is quite ok by me.... but the issue i have is the very trendy fast cutting editing and fancy effects as the programme cuts franetically from one image to another, obviously a rookie editor and director are fresh from school, and want to dazzle us with up to date processes in their editing suite. However this irritates the hell out of me, its ok in the first few moments to capture and excite a possible audience, but for 90 minutes it annoys me, a good editor should not have his work noticed above the actual information he is communicating.

Many captains are missing from actually talking about their time on the show, and it is left to secondary cast and other tertiary star trek people to talk and enthuse about the captains.

On the whole enjoyable, but nearly ruined by a trendy editor.

4.0 out of 5 stars not enough captains, but still good! 8 Jun 2013

Good documentary, but not enough by way of interviews..not all captains are interviewed so the case is a little misleading, but it is still with the cost, but you will probably see the programme on sky anytime soon..

4.0 out of 5 stars A documentary that Star Trek deserves 5 Jun 2013

The Star Trek franchise doesn't get the amount of documentary that it's 700+ hours of TV shows and movies could feed. This is one of those documentaries: a bold, well-researched, full-length profile of every one of the captain-protagonists of the canon Star Trek universe.

Differently than William Shatner's 2011 "The Captains", this documentary focuses exclusively on the characters, not the actors. Because of that I find it a nice pair to Shatner's film.

The downside, to me, is the addition of Christopher Pine's Kirk. Call me reactionary, but I think the "Abrams-verse" belongs somewhere else.

All in all, if you're a trekkie, you just can't afford not having this DVD in your collection.
