The epic story of Peter Blood, doctor and gentleman turned pirate on the caribbean seas

Product Description

WITH AN INTRODUCTION BY KATE MOSSE

Wrongfully arrested following the Monmouth rebellion of 1685, Peter Blood, country physician and former soldier, escapes the hangman's noose only to be exiled to the tropical colonies. Sold into slavery to a cruel plantation owner, his moral fortitude and medical ability soon earn him the favour of the island's governor, and the attentions of Arabella, his master's niece. When the town is attacked by marauding Spanish buccaneers, Blood springs to the rescue, and with a motley yet loyal band of shipmates escapes to begin a life of noble piracy and adventure on the caribbean seas.

A classic swashbuckling tale of piracy, romance and redemption, Captain Blood stands as one the greatest adventure novels of the 20th century.

I enjoyed this. It ties in with some good historical observations and settings which give it credibility. The characters are life size, not fantastic super beings and the plot is credible. The 80 year old writing style was a bit strange at first, but it soon became part of the whole thing. There were a couple of short Mills & Boon moments as the love interests dance around each other.

There are a few points of subtle humour, their sparsity making them the more enjoyable.

If you've looked at ocean warfare of the period you may question how some of the manoeuvres were achieved, but it doesn't get in the way.

I'm definitely going to look at more of Sabatini's stuff.

The only downside was that it wasn't long enough, if he'd written twice as much I would have given it 8/5.

Having heard Kate's review of this book on radio 4 I felt I had to read it.
It certainly lived up to its swashbucking credentials. Sabatini is a master of wit and his daring do exploits of Captain Blood are well worth the read.I felt the size of the print added to the historical nature of the content.

After being reminded of this book and how I enjoyed it at school, (albeit a long time ago), I decided to replace my lost copy. A great read! My only criticism of this version is the terribly small typeface. Purchase a magnifying glass alongside this one!
