4.0 out of 5 stars An unusual story beautifully illustrated and full of action., 25 May 1999
By A Customer
The adventure enjoyed by Captain Toby and his crew is a favorite with my nearly 3 year old son. It is full of topics to talk about, from rain storms to submarines, and yet retains a real clarity. The illustration is highly stylised, but certainly not confusing.

The evolution of the plot is a little surreal but this only caused a little concern for my son. He did, however, become a bit afraid of octopii.

This book represents, in my opinion, excellent value and would make a charming gift.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable book, 27 Dec 2006

My 2.7 years toddler daughter loves this book. The illustration style is more surreal than most books for her age but nevertheless very beautiful. She is not frightened by the octopus, especially as we make a point of laughing at it knitting! As she is starting to use her imagination and play-roling, she seems to understand that Captain Toby is using his imagination also. I would thoroughly recommend it for children aged 2 and half and above.
