"Captain Blood" is one of the prime contenders for the title of ultimate swashbuckler. It's got everything - pirates and blue water, duels, cruel slaveowners, vengeful Dons, a haughty heroine eventually won over by the dashing hero, and so forth: exactly what George MacDonald Fraser so affectionately and brilliantly lampooned in "The Pyrates". Some points grated a bit - my Jacobite sentiments go against Blood's Whiggery, and modern sensibilities won't like the occasional racism (mild by the standards of its day). If anything appears hackneyed, however, it's because so many people have copied Sabatini (and he reused some of the themes himself). Never mind all this, though: if the basic test of a book is whether it can keep you turning the pages, this one passes with flying colours.

THE THREE MUSKETEERS and THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO may have started the swashbuckling but with CAPTAIN BLOOD Rafael Sabatini launched it into the twentieth century with a melodramatic flourish and more sea battles than you can shake a peg-leg at. In Peter Blood, he gives us a brooding but honourable hero; a wronged man who takes to piracy because the only other choice is slavery.
Every ingredient you'd expect in a tale of piracy is present and correct; there are pieces of eight and ferocious sword fights; double-crosses and romance; and, of course, there's the triumph of good over evil. Sabatini breezes through the plot - sometimes far too quickly and often without fleshing out his characters sufficiently - and injects it with enough zest to keep you awake until the early hours. But it's the sea battles that mark this out as something special; you can practically hear the timbers creaking, the rigging humming and the cannons booming. It's exhilarating stuff and has you breathlessly turning the pages as thrill follows thrill.

Captin Blood is a brilliant book!! I could not put it down. A Doctor whos is sent into slavery for treason he did not commit, becomes a pirate and spreads destruction and despair amoung the Spanish. Yet he manages to retain his honour! It is a great tale.
There is only a small problem that I had with this book and that is that Raphael Sabatini gets a bit lost i.e. he seems to get a bit muddled in his exitment. This is in the chapter "Tortuga" and last for about three pages. However it is very easy to skip these and pick up the story since nothing major happens in that bit. That aside this book is a true masterpiece and you should but it, you wont regret it

Robert Whitfield's understated reading is a pleasure to listen to. Without the need to resort to sound effects or music, Whitfield brings the characters to life with his highly flexible vocal talents - unlike the Colony Players audio drama of the book (also available from Blackstone) which suffers from unconvincing accents and questionable acting.

I can't recommend this audio book enough. I played it every day while driving to work - a thoroughly enjoyable 11 hours.

If you love the exploits of the titular Captain Blood then make every effort to get your hands on this sublime audio adaptation.

My oh my what a glorious book of swashbuckling adventure on the high seas this is! The sole regret I have is not having it read earlier! Captain Peter Blood is surely one of the finest heroes ever. He is that kind of hero we all imagined being when we were boys, and would still love to be in our dreams as grown-ups: innately noble, intelligent, a master of trickery, fearless, etc etc.

However, to give the book its due, I should immediately add that this is more than a mere adventure story, in which the sole question driving you on to read is 'what happens next?'. 'Captain Blood' also has some serious things to say too about justice, revenge, slavery, loyalty, and love (of course). Sabatini was an avid historian too, so the book is meticulously researched and this clearly shows in the masterful way the whole context of the heydays of piracy are described.

This is deservedly a classic, if ever there was one!
