Product Description

Product Description

The island of Cephallonia is now familiar as the setting of the novel, "Captain Corelli's Mandolin". This book explores the turbulent history of the island, focusing on the World War II years of Italian occupation, as well as telling the behind-the-scenes story of how the film version was made. As most buildings on Cephallonia fell to rubble in a 1953 earthquake, the way it would have looked in World War II had to be recreated by sets built for the filming of Louis de Bernieres' now legendary "Captain Corelli's Mandolin". But do not expect the novel to be reproduced so faithfully because that is not the film-makers' style. They add their own visions, carefully explained here in an official companion to the movie, and de Bernieres' introduction shows how he anticipated that. All he could do to ensure respectful treatment of his novel was insist it should not be sold to Hollywood. The history of the filming is itself fascinating - the search for the cast, the locations, even the guns for the massacre of the Italians by the Germans and the other battle sequences. Film journalist Clark has done a good job here, aided and abetted by the stunning Greek island setting and ample action and character stills from the film.

A wonderful book to remember a wonderful film 30 Mar 2002
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Luis de Berniere's novel was very good and its film was even better. I was so impressed by the film that I wanted to remember it long after I have seen it. Steve Clark's book is full of wonderful pictures as well as detailed information about the cast, the story, the scenery, the music, the historical background and the making of the film. Nicolas Cage and P.Cruz fans can find their various pictures in the book. For those who have liked the film, this is a very good book to own. Although we can find most books in our stores, it would probably be impossible to find this specific book, so thanks to Amazon.com for letting me have it.

a book to remember a wonderful film 24 Mar 2002
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I had watched 'Captain Corelli's Mandolin' twice and liked it very much because of the romance, the beautiful scenery, the music, the historical facts and the wonderful acting of Nicolas Cage. I am very happy to have this book because I want to remember this film long after I have seen it. The pictures in the book are very nice and it was also enjoyable to read about all the details about the making of this film. N.Cage and P.Cruz fans can find their numerous pictures in this book. We can find most books in the bookstores in my country but this specific book is very probably will not be one of them so I'd like to thank Amazon.com for giving me the chance to have it.
Everybody who are deeply impressed with this film should have this book.
