captain britain 4 30 April 2010
Format:Paperback
first, l'm a big alan moore alan davis fan so this review may be a bit biased, but this book is a really really great read; but again as with volume 3, the book ends halfway through a storyline, so roll on volume 5, asap. secondly, very importantly, the content is different to that given in the amazon description. reprinted are; black knight/captain britain stories from Hulk Comic Weekly 42-55.57-63, and the new captain britain from Marvel Superheroes 377-389. and the Daredevils 1-11. ln one way this is a real improvement as the book does include the very early dave thorpe and alan davis stories, which l think are essential to appreciate the story as a whole, and which were not reprinted in the original captain britain TPB. but, it does mean, as mentioned above, we don't get the conclusion of the davis/thorpe/ moore epic in this volume. Relevent covers from Marvel Superheroes and the Daredevils are included, in colour. The moore/ davis part of the story is reprinted in colour, but the thorpe/davis episodes are in black and white, as they were originally presented, although all the artwork has been coloured by marvel in the past. strange. forewards by steve parkhouse and a rather bitter david thorpe add insight to the ideas behind the stories. for me the moore davis stories are the strongest by far and will (eventually) provide a stunning and totally satisfying conclusion to the new captains first adventure. shame the story is in two parts though.

By I. R. Kerr TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
The first part of the book is the conclusion to the epic black & white story involving The Black Knight, Merlyn (sic) and a host of supporting characters from British mythology. These tales were originally published in bites of 2 or 3 pages at a time so must have been really annoying for some readers and certainly lessens the suspense of the tale. The artwork is excellent though and the conclusion to the tale sets CB on his next new path.
The tales from Marvel Super-Heroes, again in black & white, see the Captain return to Earth, albeit he soon finds that it is an alternate Earth where he first meets Mad Jim Jaspers and finds he has the power to fly and his strength has increased.
The following tales revolve around an attempt by the Dimensional Development Court to push start a stalled evolution and features Saturnyne, the bowler hat wearing Avant Guards a host of freaky looking characters and The Fury, a one track minded part flesh, part machine hybrid with a mission to kill all super-heroes, including CB.
Reborn by the power of Merlyn's magic he is returned to the real Earth and soon receives visits from old foes Mastermind and Slaymaster. There's also greater roles for sister Betsy Braddock (soon to be Psylocke) and STRIKE, the British version of SHIELD, as well as The Special Executive, a very peculiar bunch of British super-heroes (plus lots more individual super-Brits), Captains UK, England amd Albion and when all seems to be crazy enough the Fury re-appears.
The last part of the book, the Alan Davis, Alan Moore team-up rescues it with some style and .... thankfully that darn sceptre disappears.
The introductions are very revealing and honest and reading them again after I finished the book shed some light on some of the ideas that seemed weak first time around.
