SYNOPSIS: Errol Flynn shot to stardom as Peter Blood, a 17th-Century physician turned pirate after escaping unjust political imprisonment. It was a role the handsome, sea-loving Tasmanian was born to play, and he shaped it into Hollywood's archetypal image of the adventurous hero. That he also becam a romatic idol and a vision of gallantry in love is due in large part to his ideally cast co-star: radiant Olivia de Havilland in the first of thir eight films together. Directed with panache by Michael Curtiz, scored with flair by Erich Wolfgang Korngold and featuring Basil Rathbone and Lionel Attwill as villains to remember, CAPTAIN BLOOD wil skipper you on the high seas of unparalleled enjoyment. ABOUT THE DVD: This is a release by WARNER HOME VIDEO for the UK market (Region 2 PAL format - which will play on all standard DVD players in the UK and the rest of Europe - buyers outside of Europe will need a multi-region player in order to view it) - The film is presented in its original BLACK & WHITE and FULL SCREEN format (1.33:1 aspect ratio) and runs for a total of 114 minutes - the AUDIO is the original ENGLISH language and MONO (there is also an Italian dubbed soundtrack on the disc) - SUBTITLES are in English, French, Italian, Dutch and Arabic (with Hearing Impaired subs for English and Italian languages only) - SPECIAL FEATURES are vintage newsreel, a comedy short 'ALL AMERICAN DRAWBACK' and a cartoon 'BILLBOARD FROLICS' (all from 1935), the film's original Theatrical Trailer and a new featurette 'CAPTAIN BLOOD: A SWASHBUCKLER IS BORN'.

As something of an Errol Flynn buff, I can reassure any of you debating whether to part with you're hard earned money on Captain Blood, that you will in no way feel dissapointed with film...
Captain Blood is ture epitomy of a rip-roaring, Swashbuckler from Hollywood's so called 'Golden Age'. Following the adventure of Peter Blood, a Doctor condemned to spend a life of slavery in the Carribean, who escapes and embarks on a life of adventure through Piracy. The story is enticing, with everything you could need for an instant classic; Injustice, Courage, Romance, Pirates, Naval Battles, fantastic acting, tremendous swordfights (espcially the duel on the beach between the two rival captains), and the merest whiff of moral undertone (the injustice of slavery).
The acting is enthusiastic (without being OTT -common in many films of this Genre and period), with Flynn on top form. All in all, an absolute classic and well worth purchasing - please dont allow the age and lack of colour to deter you from a thoroughly enjoyable film.

Pure swashbuckling joy. It has pirates, duels, double-crosses, villainous villains, a great will-they?-won't-they? romance, Basil Rathbone as a scurvy villain and of course the drop-dead-gorgeous charms of Errol Flynn. Yes, it's in black and white. Yes, the modeling work is obvious. But the plot, which is faithful to the book (also well worth a read), acting and enthusiasm of all concerned make it every bit as compelling as its technicolour descendants.

It could be bettered - but only by the original theatrical release (which is around 20 minutes longer) on DVD.

Captain Blood is one of those films I always undervalue, which at least means that each time I see it I'm pleasantly surprised by how much better it is than I remembered. Despite the lack of action until the spectacular finale, it has a good plot and some great visuals, as you'd expect from Michael Curtiz, but a big part of the fun is watching Errol Flynn become a star before your eyes: it's easy to guess which scenes were shot during the first couple of weeks when he was still a little awkward, but the confidence, charm and vigour he brings to the part easily overshadows his few missteps, and he and Olivia De Havilland are one of those rare perfect onscreen couples. Basil Rathbone's Fronch axe-scent is so out-ray-juss that even he can't keep a straight face (he literally has to turn away from the camera at one point as he gets a fit of giggles). His swordfight with Flynn is the only real disappointment, a surprisingly flat number even if we didn't have Robin Hood to compare it with. Wonderfully entertaining on every level.

As well as boasting the uncut version of the film (the UK video was a cut reissue version), Warners' DVD comes with an excellent array of extras too - a documentary on the making of the film, a 1937 radio adaptation, trailer and selected short subjects recreating the whole 1935 moviegoing experience.

Looks a bit out dated now, and no colors does not help either. But the moral is good, and Errol is good in his pirat adventure.
