Product Description

In the spring of 1969, the inauspicious release of Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band's "Trout Mask Replica", a double-album featuring 28 stream-of-consciousness songs filled with abstract rhythms and guttural bellows, dramatically altered the pop landscape. Yet, even if the album did cast its radical vision over the future of music, much of the record's artistic strength is actually drawn from the past. This book examines how Beefheart's incomparable opus is informed by a variety of diverse sources. "Trout Mask Replica" is a hybrid of the poetic declarations of Walt Whitman and the beat writer Gregory Corso, the field hollers of the Delta Blues legend Charley Patton, the urban blues of Howlin' Wolf, the free jazz of Ornette Coleman and the early Southern Californian R&B sound of Richard Berry and the Coasters. This book illustrates how "Trout Mask Replica", far from being an arcane specimen of the avant-garde, was instead a defiantly original declaration of the American imagination.

Good overview 20 Sep 2008
Format:Paperback
Pretty good overview of all the stories and myths surrounding TMR, including mention of an interesting-sounding beat-jazz LP from the 50s which Beefheart apparantely dug, and which seems pretty much impossible to get hold of now (I've tried). The usual simplistic references to Ornette Coleman and free jazz in relation to Beef's improvised sax scrobblings (but then again, they've permeated most Beef criticism since Lester Bangs), but useful nonetheless, apart from that. And it's as much about Beefheart's career as a whole as it is about the particular album (though with some decent close analysis), so provides a pocket-sized alternative to Mike Barnes' bio.

A Small Good Thing 20 Feb 2011
Format:Paperback
I'm giving this book 5 stars partly because I've tried a few of these 33 1/3 books and they're not always that great. Some of them lack detail and research, almost operating at a fanzine level of discourse. But Courrier's attempt is both personal and objectively detailed, covering Beefheart's whole output in relation to TMR. It also digs quite well into what might be termed the 'roots' of Beefheart's poetry and music and vision, and the conditions under which the album was made. This book is a small good thing and well worthy of its subject matter.

Format:Paperback
A slim, condensed volume (152 pages), warm, intelligently written and without padding. Essential reading for anyone remotely interested in the 20th century phenomenom that is Captain Beefheart. Mentalism (OED) describes: the theory that physical & psychological phenomena are ultimately explicable only in terms of a creative & interpretive mind. Make that MINDS. In respect of TMR The Magic Band (John French, in particular)deserve special mention too.

As a young Jazz enthusiast starting from Getz, Miles, Coltrane, I sought out horn players in particular which somehow led me to Beefheart (soprano sax)and felt the message(of TMR)as unique and special from the start without knowing why! (In THE '70'S I saw Beefheart at The New Victoria plus Royal Albert Hall_),sheer presence blew me away.

Visceral creativity can be a challenge for limited powers like mine to fully interpret many of Don's compositions I only know they're valuable and will continue breathe & haunt the human condition for quite some time to come.
