Product Description

Bucky has survived his first major trial as the new Captain America, but now a villain from his past - both as Bucky in WW2 and as the Winter Soldier during the Cold War - has come to the U.S. and he'll have to face his history just as he's finding his feet in the present. The beginning of a gripping war and espionage tale, with some familiar faces for long-term Cap readers, as the New Captain America moves further into the Marvel U. Collects Captain America #43-48.

This volume collects Captain America #43-48, and continues directly on from the previous volume - The Man Who Bought America - in which Bucky Barnes, the former Winter Soldier, has become accepted as the new Captain America, and Sharon Carter has defeated and apparently killed the Red Skull and Arnim Zola.

In this volume, we have two three-part stories - `Time's Arrow' and `Old Friends and Enemies', which form one interlinked story. In the first, we have a `now' story with Batroc `ze Leapaire' hunting for an artefact held in secret by the United Nations, closely pursued by Bucky and the Black Widow. We also have two flashback stories, one set in 1942 as Captain America, Bucky and the Human Torch rescue a Chinese scientist from the Japanese, and another set in 1968 with the Winter Soldier sent to kill a Chinese scientist... and guess which very old Chinese scientist is behind Batroc's search and recovery operation, which ends in the theft of the body of a certain currently `dead' android. It's no wonder the UN didn't want Bucky knowing what they were hiding...

The second story features Bucky and Namor (and eventually the Black Widow) hunting down the now Mad Chinese scientist, who has been experimenting with his own supersoldier programme, and in his spare time makes viruses to cull the earth's population. Mad is such a relative term. Oh, and the Winter Soldier failed in his assassination attempt in 1968, but there was some `collateral damage', which may explain why the scientist is mad. ["Mad? I was livid!"]

This is an excellent fast-paced story with superb artwork, and is highly recommended.

And for a sequel of sorts - with happy endings for a change, see the Marvel mini-series `The Torch'. Oops, what a give away...

A wonderful book to both read and just to admire the artwork. For anybody not already familiar with Ed Brubaker's wonderful run on Captain america dive right in here. This book features the splendidly sinister man with no face and his all action confrontation with the new Captain America. I loved it, and so will you.

Ed Brubaker rocks 24 Nov 2009
Format:Paperback
Hi. I must say that I read comics since I was a kid and Captain America, among ohters, is one of my favorites. And sometimes I fear when a new writer picks up a character. But then, I must say, this guy, Ed Brubaker, rocks! Serious. Is doing a great job. I think this is the second book of him and the plot of the story is really good. It's not lame, it's not simplist, it's good.

Thanks and Cheers!
