By Parka HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
Length: 2:03 Mins
This is a delightful book for Captain America and art book lovers.

The hardcover book comes with a slipcase of Captain America's iconic shield. It's a simple and striking design. On the back is the Hydra logo. When you pull out the book, you see a beautiful wall illustration with Captain America in World War II costume. Nice.

The 240 pages are packed with concept art on characters, environment, weapons and war machines. There are minimal film stills, a couple of old Captain America comic panels for the history, storyboards and the movie posters.

The character designs are wonderful. There's Captain America in various combat uniforms, with variations of leather jackets, straps and belts, helmets, new or war torn. And then there's the actual redesigned Captain America costumes, again in many variations. All look terrific.

The other characters included are Red Skull (Johann Schmidt), Howard Stark (Tony Starks dad), Peggy Carter (love interest), Howling Commandos (Captain America's field team) and a couple of other miscellaneous characters. Of particular mention would be the Hydra troopers. There are enough designs to make it look like a military fashion show.

The environment designs are a mixture of digital paintings and composites. Some are blown up slightly too big and look a bit blurry. Overall, they still look nice. Most of the set designs are quite dark in mood.

There's a huge section on weaponry. The various prototypes shields made by Howard Stark are interesting - one has a machine gun built in! Hydra weaponry is a huge part of this section. There are designs for huge tanks, mini tanks, Schmidt's Coupe, bombers, motorcycles, trains and submarines. The designs look sophisticated and classic at the same time. The Coupe's 3D model is very beautiful.

There are also accompanying artist commentary that explain the background.

This book is really packed. A highly recommended companion for the movie.

Wonderful 25 Aug 2011

If you have seen the movie, you will apreciate to see the amazing job they do for it. The book is protected by hard cover sleeve (illustration you can see on the photo). You can't miss this item, the best from the movie licence.

Super hero awesomeness! 21 July 2011
By Stop Motion Maniac - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
My pre-order of Capt. America arrived today and my first impression is very good. Like Thor, Captain America comes in a sturdy cardboard slipcase with nice spot varnish on the star and silver lettering on "Captain America." The back of the slipcase also freatures a nice spot varnish of the skull and tentacles. Very nice. The hardback book is 240 pages and the back board features nice embossing. The paper quality is the same for the other Marvel publications (e.g. Thor)...which is good. I think I detected one or two images that were enlarged too much and a little pixelated, but really nothing that would detract in this case. The printing is very nice overall.

The book is divided into the following chapters:

Foreword by Rick Heinrichs
Introduction: The American Dream
The Sentinel of Liberty
The Red Menace
Allied Forces
The Battle Lines
Heavy Artillery
Seeing Action
The Art of War
Contributor Bios/Author Bio
Acknowledgments
Artist Credits

The Sentinel of Liberty shows many concepts for Capt. America's costume. The Red Menace focuses on conceptualizing the enemy (i.e. the Nazi's) but WW II of "the Marvel Universe." So it's sci fi. The Red Skull is pretty cool and lots of renderings of him. This chapter also includes the weapons of the Red Menace and locations/scenery/settings. The Allied Forces chapter is shorter than the Red Menace, and includes character renderings and photos. The Battle Lines contains a lot of the Allied buildings and settings. Heavy Artillery contains renderings/sketches of tanks, cars, planes, motorbikes, trains, and submarines. Seeing Action contains storyboards from the film. The Art of War contains movie posters etc of the film and some comics work.

This is an awesome Art of... title. I like the way the book was organized, and I'm loving all the artwork.

I highly recommend.

Marvel's Best Of The Year - The First Avenger Captain America 28 July 2011
By S. Smith - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
First, the movie is awesome. Don't miss it on the big screen. Wonderful adaption of the rich history of one of Marvel's greatest superheroes. This book is also the best book of this genre done by Marvel for its films. Every page is gorgeous, filled with photos and art, the layout and quality is incredible. A beautiful book for fans of either the film or the comic. Make sure you pick this up. I hope Marvel has published it in sufficient quantity unlike the first Iron Man book that disappeared and became ultra expensive for a while. I can't say enough about the colors and tone of this book, the richness of the photos and the content. Every page is a piece of art. Five Stars.
