4.0 out of 5 stars "..CHEESY FUN.." 21 April 2012
This is not to be confused with the new version of the captain America movie, this is the original 1990 version from the director of nemesis and cyborg!! It has slight similarities in story to the new version but mainly goes in a different direction, the main villain is still red skull who looks pretty cool and has some decent make up effects, theres plenty of action all done in a cheesy fashion not quite as exciting as you want it but this was twenty years ago!! If you love old cheesy action movies and comic book films then its worth checking out for a bit of old retro fun. No features on disc.

3.0 out of 5 stars A nice addition for Marvel Film collectors 25 Mar 2012
With the new version of the story released last year, a lot of people have forgotten the 1990 version of the story as they have the 1970's TV movies. The 1990 version of Captain America was put together by Menahem Golan's short lived 21st Century Film Corporation. Golan's company was formed after he lost control of Cannon Films (Death Wish sequels, American Ninja and various Chuck Norris epics) and to be honest Captain America is all but in name a Cannon film. That should give you some idea of how Marvel's character would be put on screen.

The story we all know is that Steve Rogers (Matt Salinger), the sickly all American boy is transformed into Cap and gets frozen in ice after battling The Red Skull. Waking up in the 90's Rogers learns that Skull is still alive and living in Italy (well, filmed in the old Yugoslavia actually). So we now have a story involving the President of America, a shady General and the Skull still wanting to take over the world.

Director Albert (Cyborg, Dollman) Pyun does well with obviously a low budget and the film is quite charming once you get past the naff music score and some very scary late 80's fashions. It also has a great supporting cast including Ronny Cox, Ned Beatty and Darren McGavin. What's also terrific is that Cap's uniform is cool and he uses his iconic shield a fair amount staying faithful to the source material.

I haven't seen it in years (since the old 20/20 vision video release in a big silver box) and it's nice to see it being released now after such a long time being unavailable. It's sitting proudly on my shelf next to the Bill Bixby Hulk DVD's and my collection of Nick Hammond 1970's Spidey films, now there is a series that should be released.

5.0 out of 5 stars Full HD for a collector ! 13 Aug 2013
Format:Blu-ray|Verified Purchase
I couldn't believe it but this Blu Ray is a REGION FREE even if it said on the backpaper that's a Region A NTSC.
If you are a fan of Captain America, you can't missed it, yes I know it's a cheesy and campy movie but take a look at the image : it's amazing.

Better than the DVD !!!!! And on the special features, you have a brand new featurette with a looking back at Cap's movie with director Albert Pyun and star Matt Salinger !

PS : We are on the page of the Blu Ray and Amazon put commentaries about the DVD ! I don't understand !

2.0 out of 5 stars Low Budget Tripe 25 Mar 2014
By Timelord007 TOP 500 REVIEWER
Dvd Info.
Region 2, Running time 93 minutes approx.

1)Ned Beatty featured in another comic book movie Superman & it's sequel Superman 2.
2)Ronny Cox film appearances include Beverley Hills Cop 1 & 2, Robocop, Total Recall.
3)Albert Pyun film credits as director include, Cyborg, Nemesis 1-4, Kickboxer 2, The Sword & The Sorcerer.
4)Val Kilmer was approached for the part of Captain America but was to busy filming The Doors.
5)Ronny Cox & Ned Beatty also starred together in Deliverance.

When a super serum project goes horrifyingly wrong on a young Russian boy, A scientist defects to the Wet & ith the help of the US Army has a chance to right her past mistake while transforming a 7 stone weaking with asthma Steve Rogers into a super soldier named Captain America.

As he battles the vicious sinister Red Skull whos face is a side effect from an experiment as he was the other boy in Russia, Captain America is frozen in ice for decades is freed & returns to a world he no longer knows he aids the US in battling the Red Skull once more & rescue the President of the United States of America whom the Red Skull has kidnapped & is holding America to ransom.

Timelord Thoughts.
Not to be confused with the excellent Captain America The First Avenger or the watchable Reb Brown Captain America tv movies of the 1970's as this is tbe 1990 dire low budget movie.

This is just a dire low budget affair with poor production values, Weak plot & bad & nothing to Recommend a viewing.

Matt Salinger fails to convince as Steve Rogers/Captain America who plays the part with a huge slice of ham & while Matt has the physical look of the role he lacks any conviction.

4.0 out of 5 stars Capt America 13 April 2012
By Isis
Good ripping yarn - plenty of action and true to the graphic novel. Good for a rainy day over if you can't find anything else to watch.

Seen this film years ago. It's a classic Super Hero film. A bit cheesy at times but you're gonna love it for what it is.
