Another worthy addition to the Panini UK pocket book reprint library of Marvel Comics' best, in this case, the Roger Stern & John Byrne's entire (words & pictures respectively) ten issue run on Captain America vol. 1.

Younger comic fans and/or newbies devoted to the works of Grant Morrison, Brian Michael Bendis, Warren Ellis and Neil Gaiman et al, might find these tales rather uninvolving or, just plain embarrassing. Sorry, kids - but this is what comics used to be like over thirty years ago! We kick off with Captain America #247 which shows the Star spangled avenger mixing it up with 'Baron Strucker' which continues into #248's Dragon Man and we find out that Machinesmith is after revenge on Steve (Captain America) Rogers, with old Fantastic Four foe Dragon Man co-opted into the action. There's also some exciting scenes with Steve Rogers meeting his new neighbours and coming off a little behind the times as they describe their love of Bruce Springsteen and Elvis Costello (as produced by Nick Lowe).

This exciting tale wraps itself up in #249 with Cap fighting various partially assembled robotic versions of Spider-Man, Magneto and the Thing and Machinesmith turning out to be not quite the man you thought he was in a fairly melodramatic turn of events. #250 sees Captain America ponder running for President and #'s 251 - 255 have Cap mixing it up with Batroc the Leaper, Gallic windbag and master of the French martial art of Savate. Teaming up with the dainty and genteel Mr. Hyde isn't one of Batroc's better ideas and Cap wins the day, with a little help from you-know-who.

These are still fine super-hero tales with beautiful art that will never lose effectiveness or lose freshness.
Stern and Byrne just hit on all cylinders with these stories, with excellent scripts and Byrne providing iconic images of Cap in action.
Awesome stories from the Stern & Byrne team, that stand the test of time.

Captain America fans will love this compact pocketbook. Bought as a gift for my son who has enjoyed reading from cover to cover (many times).
