Product Description

Product Description

The Capital Ring is a 75-mile (120 km) walking route encircling inner London that links the astonishing number of islands of greenery – parks, woodlands, abandoned railway lines, towpaths and nature reserves – that still survive in the very heart of the city. The Ring takes in many of London’s leading attractions – for example, the Thames Barrier, Eltham Palace and Richmond Park – as well as overlooked gems such as Oxleas Meadows, the Parkland Walk and Abbey Mills Pumping Station, a Victorian extravaganza once known as ‘the Temple of Sewage’. This guide, which divides the route into 15 sections, each starting and finishing at a public transport point, is packed with a vast amount of information which will guide walkers to the many and varied treasures that lie along the Ring’s route. Colin Saunders is a member of the London Walking Forum, which first conceived the idea of the two London orbital routes (The London Loop, the second, outer, route is also the subject of one of Aurum’s Recreational Path Guides) and developed the Capital Ring in collaboration with the London boroughs through which it runs.

Capital Route! 2 Jan 2011
Format:Paperback
Am now on walk 3 of the "Link" and have found the guide extremely helpful and informative; not least when detailing watering holes! Being a North Londoner, the walk has been a good introduction to the "dark side" and as I discovered in Walks 1 & 2, it isn't dark at all!!

The Capital Ring 14 Nov 2011
By A D M
Format:Paperback
This is a really useful book, and a source of much valuable information.
I am very happy reading Ordinance Survey Maps, but it is a MAJOR flaw of this book (and it's companions in the London walking series) that the 'specially annotated' OS Map extracts that accompany the walks do NOT show road NAMES, only the very occasional road number. This is virtually useless to a stranger in a town, where one road junction can look very similar to another, and where it is all too easy to become lost. Make sure you take an A-Z, or a GPS, as well as this book, and you will have the ideal combination.

So far we've only done stages 1 and 2 of the walk, but we've found the guide to be excellent, taking in parts of London that we never knew existed. So far, the walk itself has been extremely well signposted, which means that the detailed directions in the guide aren't usually necessary. The fact that segments of the OS maps are printed on the same pages as the text that relates to them makes the guide very easy to use.
