Product Description

Product Description

"The Capital Ring" is a 75-mile (120 km) walking route encircling inner London that links the astonishing number of islands of greenery - parks, woodlands, abandoned railway lines, towpaths and nature reserves - that still survive in the very heart of the city. "The Ring" takes in many of London's leading attractions - for example, the Thames Barrier, Eltham Palace and Richmond Park - as well as overlooked gems such as Oxleas Meadows, the Parkland Walk and Abbey Mills Pumping Station, a Victorian extravaganza once known as 'the Temple of Sewage'. This guide, which divides the route into 15 sections, each starting and finishing at a public transport point, is packed with vast amount of information which will guide walkers to the many and varied treasures that lie along the Ring's route.

I bought the book new, having sought out the most up to date version at the time, only to discover that it still had a number of references to things that were going to happen prior to 2008! However, apart from that, the book is very well written and laid out and describes a fascinating and thoroughly enjoyable walk. There's a new version due out in May 2010 so hopefully that will be more fully updated (if you can wait till then).

Essential reading 17 July 2011

My mate Douglas and I completed the London Ring (78 miles) last December in 7 trips with the essential help of this excellent book. Whilst the Ring itself is very well signposted (congratulations to the London mayors responsible for its inception and upkeep), the maps in the book were an added help. But it was the book's description of places we wandered through and the historical background that really made this a great walk and I would buy any similar book by the same author on any other walk without thinking twice. Go buy some walking boots and this book and get going - it is not hard work.

The second handbook was indistinguishable from new condition, and since it was significantly less than the cost of the book when new, and it is now out of print then I am more than happy with the outcome. Shame about the snow, but as soon as its gone I will be out there vigorously using my new walking guide book. Dr Damian Cummins
