President Obama recently called for a new financial regulation system in the United States. In order to understand the intricacies of new regulation, individuals must have a strong foundation in how capital markets function as well as how financial instruments and derivatives work. Capital Markets, Derivatives, and the Law provides readers with the foundation necessary to make informed, well-reasoned decisions about capital market participation, derivative utilization, and adherence to existing and future regulations.

This publication is an essential guide for attorneys and business professionals looking for an accessible resource to better understand the legal and business considerations of capital markets and derivatives transactions. This book offers expert insight into how derivatives work. The author also explores the structures of derivatives as well as how they are regulated and litigated. In the complex world of the current capital market upheaval, this book provides useful definitions, case law examples, and insight into structures, regulation, and litigation strategies.

5.0 out of 5 stars Complex Made Simple 11 Feb 2010

In Capital Market, Derivatives, and the Law, Professor Alan Rechtschaffen takes a complicated but important topic and makes it understandable to the average reader. Our financial regulators -- and everyone else -- need to have it on their bookshelves.
3.0 out of 5 stars Look for the new edition 23 Dec 2013
By Lawrence Baxter - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This book was, briefly, a very useful introduction to an enormously complex subject. I particularly like the way the author explains the field of derivatives within the context of the broader financial system. But it is badly out of date, having been published before the passage of the Dodd-Frank Act, which of course has profoundly reshaped the derivatives markets. I understand that a new edition is in the works and I eagerly look forward to it.

In the mean time, the published have no business still peddling this edition, particularly at the ridiculous price they are charging. In fact I don't understand the pricing strategy at all. No rational buyer would purchase a personal copy at this price (I bought a used copy), so their only market will be libraries that have no choice.

But for the book's datedness and the pricing strategy, I would have been tempted to give the book 4 or 5 stars.

I have heard this author speak on numerous occasions; he has a gift for presenting complicated material in a clear, concise and entertaining fashion. This book demonstrates his ability to transmit information extends to the printed page as well. A fundamental text for anyone trying to make sense of the often confusing instruments at play in today's financial markets.
