Book Description

All Livia really wants is for her life to be simple: she'd like to make her interior design business work, see lots of her friends, and maybe find a man - if she ever meets one who knows that Smeg is a brand of kitchen appliance and not a sexually transmitted disease. But events - or more specifically Livia's friends - conspire to keep her life complicated. What with Steve's secret liaison with 'vegetable girl', Mandy's insistence that Livia hosts a dinner party to help her snare the latest object of her rather fleeting affections, and the glamorous Zena's determination to hold a party to relaunch Livia's career, the simple life just isn't an option. And the antique pistol in the bottom of her wardrobe is the final straw.

About the Author

Laura Lockington was born in Kent but, via interludes in Cornwall, Florence and London, has now settled in Brighton. She has been married, more than once, but vows never to do it again - at least not unless too many vodka martinis prevail over her better judgement. She has had a varied career, working at various points in TV, films, theatre and interior design, but in 1999 abandoned the rat race to write her first novel, Capers in the Sauce. She has grown out of clubbing and taken up cooking for friends instead, but is a firm believer in one's inalienable right to behave disreputably when necessary.

5.0 out of 5 stars All Human Life is Here 5 July 2001
"Capers in the Sauce" really is a rollicking good read. Very quickly into the book, you feel as if you've known the main character, Livia, all your life and then you get to know her friends. And with friends like this, who needs anyone else? They are all good to know from the old lady across the street to the aging rock star's wife. This book is very funny...then you find yourself crying as the plot takes you down unexpected roads leading back to more laughter. It's an emotional jerker and truely leaves you wanting more. This is Laura Lockington's first published work. I, for one, can't wait for many more.

5.0 out of 5 stars A page-turner you'll never forget! 27 Jan. 2002
Laura Lockington has written a real winner. Full of acute observations about being thirty-something combined with witty one-liners and mood enhancing scenes, this book promtes a feeling of eurphoria you won't want to come to an end. You'll keep turning the pages until it's all over..and what a pity it is when it is! Can't wait for the next Laura Lockington novel to arrive.

A really, really good book. Funny, true (well, the comments and asides are, if not the situations)and a very good read. Livia, the heroine makes you want to knock up a bowl of soup and open the wine and sit down for a really good chat. I loved this book, and will buy it as a present for all my friends birthdays. A real winner.

One reading has you hooked. Once you've entered the world of Livia and her friends(and enemies)you'll want to return. A book to not just read once on holiday, but to return to and read on a dark winters afternoon to bring some warmth and light into your life. Don't lend your copy out, make your friends buy their own. This book has everything from happy times to sad times. Nice people you want to know and complete sh**s you're glad you'll never have to meet. This is a book for grown ups to gloat over. Now we want to read the next, and the next, and the next. Keep writing Laura, we need books like this.Food, frocks, fun, and frolics, in a word fabulous!

5.0 out of 5 stars Breathes new life into an exhausted genre 2 Aug. 2001
By A Customer
For the past 5 years it's been impossible to walk into a bookshop without having ones eyes assaulted by a host of candy-coloured covers containing the latest chick lit quick flick. sadly, the heroines tend to be totally gutless, joyless and sexless and are as concerned with hooking A Man as any 19th century ninny. Miss Lockingtons book however breathes life into this exhausted genre and reminded me more of nancy mitford than bridget jones. A brilliant first book by a very smart cookie; cant wait for the next one -

5.0 out of 5 stars Stylish entertainment with never a dull moment 5 Aug. 2001
By A Customer
Beware. This is one of those books that makes you laugh out loud on the train, attracting funny looks from your fellow passengers. Dangerously funny from the outset, Capers In The Sauce centres round the chaotic life of its tremendously likeable heroine Livia and her bonkers friends who all have an extraordinary talent for getting into scrapes.
Livia - wise, witty, a great cook and someone who really knows how to enjoy life - is surrounded by her best friends, all as lovable as they are barking: there's Molly whose adolescence has extended over decades, gorgeous posh Zena, Steve, whose lovelife is complicated by his inability to say no, the wry fashionista Monty and warm, wonderful, camp Pete, never seen without a bottle of bubbly.
Their lives intertwine in sophisticated, high-octane horseplay; and the plot unfolds at a terrific pace, sweeping the reader along with it willy-nilly. There's plenty of high jinks, and poignant moments too - it's rather like Nancy Mitford beamed down in Soho 2001.
Superb, stylish entertainment with never a dull moment, Capers in the Sauce brims with brilliant writing and sparkles with good humoured intelligence. Lockington whips up a sauce that is light, creamy, delicious and leaves you panting for more.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my favourite ever novels 26 Sept. 2012
By Nicole
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I LOVE LOVE LOVE this book. I read it YEARS ago from my local country library when still in highschool, but never been able to source since at either city libraries or book shops. So thank you for having it available for me to be able to purchase and add to my well loved collection. And to Laura Lockington - please write more books, its sad that it has stopped at Capers in the Sauce!
