After having played Riding Spirits 1 for some time and liking it pretty much, I was really looking forward to the sequel. The original game has its weak points which I was hoping would be sorted out in RS 2; unfortunately, they failed in most areas. The sound is worse than the previous incarnation, even after CAPCOM’s boasting of a new sound engine that would make it totally realistic. Not likely: The two-strokes (2-Cycle in the game) sound more like four-strokes for one thing; but having said that, you do at least always hear your engine over the other bikes.

The graphics are only slightly better too and in some cases the bikes appear blocky and cartoony.

The game play has a more arcade feel, which is a real disappointment. I was hoping for more realism, not less. If RS hopes to be the 2-wheel Gran Turismo, they’re going to have to do a hell of a lot better! You only get two viewpoints on RS2 (on bike and behind). Still no helmet cam view though. That would’ve made such a huge difference – like with the Superbike games and GP500 for the PC – still the best motorcycle racing titles after all these years!

The handling is different too, with your machine feeling like it isn’t really attached to the tar-mac; and it weaves from side-to-side at the merest input.

The game boasts 330 bikes, but when you consider that you have bikes from 50cc, it’s not so much more than the original.

The tracks are a definite improvement on RS with more flowing corners and the night tracks (hated in the previous game) are better lit.

The developers have obviously wanted to create a motorcycle Gran Turismo, as there are many similarities. You can race off-road as well as on street circuits, courses with a real TT feeling (which I like a lot) and racetracks.

It’s a real shame and a real disappointment that they didn’t manage to reach their goals.

Graphics: 3/5
Game play: 3/5
Sound: 2/5
Longevity: 4/5

You hope for so much.... I think RS1 is better in most areas except tracks.

The game has many flaws but there is still enjoyment to be had. The game only really comes alive when you have a fast bike which you have tuned. The handling is like moto GP but without the controllable slides. The best feature is being able to modify the look of your bike, unfortunately the replays generally are shot from too far away to admire your machine at work. When you do get the odd close up camera the graphics are acceptable. In general while playing the graphics are perfectly average. The menus are slick and loading times fast and the game runs with no slowdown. The flaws centre around courses with too many tight corners which you have to crawl around - a shame as some have excellent sweeping sections which are a joy when you get it right. The collision physics which would appear to be modelled on a rubber ball is bewildering. The sound is dissapointing too although there are a few bikes which sound ok. The handling is ok until you get in a slide, which are generally unrecoverable.
But there is plenty to see and do especially if you like bikes, and especially for £15.

Riding Spirits II 2 July 2004
By A Customer
I bought this game as I've been a massive fan of the MotoGP games over the years.I kinda hoped this would offer the same sort of gameplay, but with the added novelty of being able to use and customise road-based bikes.
I'm actually really disappointed. The whole game reminds me of something you would have played in an arcade about 5 years ago.The 'showroom' graphics of the bike are quite good, allowing me the excitement of buying bikes I have actually owned in real life over the years, but the dynamic graphics are poor.
The gampelay is also poor with stupid tracks (cobble roads !) and poor dynamics. The bikes are slow to react and you have to allow for a delay between your controller movement and the bike reacting.
Realsim is also poor.I've won umpteen races on a 1980's Yamaha FZ750 which wouldn't stand a chance against modern bikes, and I've also got a tuned Honda SP2 which struggles to get over 130mph.The sound is comical as well.Very poor.
To sum up,very disappointing gameplay but I do enjoy buying bikes I have actually owned in real life and then buying all sorts of trick-bits to tart them up.
Gameplay 4/10
Realism 2/10
Sound 0/10
Graphics 5/10
Longevity 8/10 (but you'll get bored with it)
