4.0 out of 5 stars What a ride! 14 April 2013
Platform for Display:PlayStation3|Amazon Verified Purchase
Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
I feel that it is practically impossible to say a few words about this game
without commenting on the history of the franchise prior to the reboot and up until this point.

The difficulty setting as for what many "trolls" and nay-sayers seems to address is not at all relevant considering
the depth of variety this game has to offer. there is however a gap between the original baseline settings to the new ones.
It looks somewhat like this

These are the modes that are available to you from the very first time you boot up the game
______________
Human (Very easy)
Devil Hunter (Easy)
Nephilim (Normal)
______________

And these will have to be unlocked

Son of Sparda (Hard)
Dante Must Die(Borders to "very hard")

And the two alternative difficulty settings which are more of a challenge based setting
Heaven or Hell (classic DMC setting where you get killed in one hit, but so does your enemies. Yes that includes bosses)
Hell or Hell (Interesting setting where your enemies will need as many hits as they would on Son of Sparda, but you will die from one hit)

So in case you have been wondering whether the negative reviews are telling the truth or just acting like cry-babies over the reboot they didn't ask for, They're wrong and misinforming you about what this game has to offer and what it doesn't.

There is plenty of challenging hours to be yelled and screamed at in this game, and even an arena mode where you can compete with other players on high scores.
Arena mode involves endless mixed enemy waves for you to slice up.

The new control scheme works VERY well with the action packed ranking system which remains strong and addictive.
My only complaint around this aspect of the game is that it seems a little too easy to achieve "SSS" scores, especially if you're fond of spamming "AOE" combos.

As for the Story: The Story for the first time ever implements a "real" setting where there is a world filled with people and a storysetting to back its credibility, unlike the original franchise where you were just told to go along with the idea of people walking around out there.

The demons and beasties will have to be fought in the in-between world known as "Limbo".
I specifically liked the way you enter the world of Limbo, where you get to observe the enviroment around you completely change and alter it self as you go about your business in there.
The character you will get to know as "Kat" will be your guide and gateway to this world which only people with special gifts and demons have the power to access and alter.
The downside to this new universe is that the Castlevania like feel the old universe had is pretty much gone, and that is putting it nicely.

And as for Dante himself! He can seem a bit like a brat much more than a badass, but I believe that has something to do with the sore fact that we had all of this forced down our throat, but for a reboot on such a massive scale, I will say that the now infamous studio called "Ninja Theory" has done a damn good job at staying true to the original recipe while avoiding to bring the hiccups from the previous universe along with it.

All in all a very entertaining and well made game, even the graphics surprised me as something that seemed to be standing out with an almost oil painting like setting to it.

I'd say that it is worth buying this game over rental since you will be surprised how much replayability this game has.
Cheers

This reboot of Devil May Cry has a beautiful art style, the combat is fun and fluid.
The story is much better than it's predecessors and the gameplay has much more variety.
Original Dante is still cooler.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible reboot of a well-loved series 3 Feb 2013
Platform for Display:PlayStation3
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
I'm not the biggest fan of reboots (in games or films), especially when they're not really needed as the originals were so good, so last year when I heard that this classic series was getting a "reimagining" I was a little worried. Dante appeared to now be some bratty teenager and long gone are the gothic backdrops that we've all grown to love.

Well after much umming and ahhing over when to get my soul destroyed by trying this new take on the series, I decided to give it a go...and I'm so glad I did!

Dante isn't as bratty as we were made to believe (there are a lot of reviews out there from fans who blatantly haven't played this game, describing Dante to be "emo") so I was pleasantly surprised by this fresh, witty character that I'm now seeing from a new point of view. The gameplay is as fun as ever, literally a button basher to get those SSS style scores, but it does still require a certain amount of skill to work through large groups of enemies, especially on the harder difficulty settings (I'm currently playing it on Dante Must Die difficulty - man, that is hard!!!). The cinematics are excellent, however some of the dialogue is a little too cheesy for my liking at times, and this game has some of the best visuals I have seen on the PS3 (in-game and during cut-scenes), such detail and vibrancy are too much to take in sometimes. The soundtrack is also very decent with a mix of heavy-bass dub-step and hard rock throughout the game, courtesy of Noisia and Combichrist.

I'm basically so glad I picked this game up, I can't praise it enough. Buy it now!
