I was led to this album by references to Gentle Giant, and the comparisons are not invalid. However, they detract from what Advent have achieved in creating their own, distinctive voice. They are not especially derivative of Gentle Giant, as some critics might lead you to believe. If there are comparisons to be drawn, then it will be the high standard of musicianship, and the willingness to try a less well-trodden path, with crafted songs that reflect effort and intelligence in their construction and execution. There are upbeat, up tempo songs alongside more thoughtful and measured tunes. Throughout, the melodies abound, backed by solid rhythmic cadences, breathtaking pauses, handbrake turns of pace and dynamics, and a rich and varied choice of melodic passages with evocative lyrics, all interlaced with humour, wit and pathos.
I love the richness of these songs together as an exploration of all the special qualities in the best music - novelty, harmonies galore, and from start to finish something interesting going on just below the surface. If you like music that is smart without being clever, poignant without being sentimental, and rich without being cloying, you will love this band, and this album. I look forward to the end of 2012, and their next album - years in the making, and if it is as good as 'Cantus Firmus', it will be well worth the wait.
