Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Somewhere on a soulful musical timeline between Sly Stone and Joss Stone, you’ll find Nikka Costa. While many find chart success by putting out palpable but forgettable pop/soul mixes, with Can'tneverdidnothin', Costa has once again written and recorded a funk/soul/rock mix that rises her above the plethora of pseudo-soul. Coming from a family tree with deep musical roots (her father Don was a well-respected producer/arranger who worked with Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr.), Nikka Costa began her recording career at the age of eight, where she scored a European hit with her cover of "Out Here On My Own" from the movie Fame. For the next 20 years, Costa put out a handful of releases she herself has downplayed as inferior before coming into her first considered ‘real’ solo effort, the impressive, soul-filled Everybody Got Their Something. For her new release, the funk and rock has been turned up considerably; Costa’s shining moments of uptempo strength come via the funk-heavy tracks, most notably during the cover of Tina Turner’s "Funkier Than A Mosquito’s Tweeter", with its spectacular horn section. The CD’s other highlights come in the ballads, most specifically the disc’s two closers, the tender "Hey Love" and the raw emotion of "Fatherless Child" about the passing of her legendary dad. "can'tneverdidnothin'" is a disc that is rare in it's authentic, sincere groove, and it seems likely that as Costa continues to grow, so will the depth of her music. --Denise Sheppard

5.0 out of 5 stars Love Her NOW!, 5 Feb 2007
By L. W (England) - See all my reviews
When i first saw Nikka gyrating around in that fabulous blue scarf on her video for 'Like a Feather' i knew she was going to be something special. Bought the almbum almost immediatly and waited for the furore to kick off surrounding this new, sassy, groovy chick. Yet..... silence......

Nikka Costa is one of the worlds great undiscovered talents. Her ability is on a level far superior to the majority of todays 'musical talent' and i am aghast she hasnt acheieved more! Part of me feels its a mix of her own damn coolness and not wanting to force herself on people. After all, she knows shes hot.

Anyway, this latest offering from the red haired queen of cool is no disappointment. My only wish is that is was longer. She releases things so sparingly that the slightest glimmer of Costa glory sets fans amock with excitement. It felt like i was meeting an old friend again. Her voice had its same growl, the same power, the same sensuality. Yet it felt as if she'd come far in her life and was sharing a new mature self confidence. Every track is fab. The lyrics are poetic and certainly not standard stock. The beats are funky, as id damn well hoped theyd be and the result is a huge smile on my face.

Till next time Costa!

4.0 out of 5 stars Raunchy, funky and retro, 5 Aug 2005
Raunchier and funkier than Anastacia, Nikka Costa even enlists Lenny Kravitz on bass and drums on a few tracks as well as covering an Ike and Tina tune to make sure the 70s rhythm & blues flavour is unmistakable (if you like Kravitz, then you are sure to like her slightly similar retro-style).

There is good depth of quality on the album. Nikka sings her slower songs with soulful passion and adds a raw edge to show that she can warble, but is far too funky to really go for all out Diva!

A pleasantly ballsy, funky and retro album that emphasises how tame so many other female singers are in comparison.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you love good music, you love her, 5 Aug 2005
From the first time I have heard her first album 'Everybody got there something' I completly fel in love with her. Such an original, talented, down-to-earth, honest artist. Her music rocks, it touches, you wanna cry and laugh at the same time.
I am sure we will hear from her more often. You just got to love her.

5.0 out of 5 stars The female Van Morrison
I don't listen to R'n'B. I don't like Prince. In short, I HAVE NO SOUL.

But this is excellent. I think she sounds like a female Van Morrison. Read more
