Product Description

Product Description

The Canticles are the crowning glory of the Anglican liturgy and have afforded the greatest opportunity for musical development within the Anglican rite. Thousands of people daily hear the world-famous St Paul's Cathedral Choir and organist Simon Johnson under their director of music Andrew Carwood singing these settings. Here these forces present a satisfying collection including nineteenth-century masterpieces by Stanford and Charles Wood, and from the twentieth century Walton's Coronation Te Deum, written for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, and Tippett's monumental work for St John's College Cambridge.

Services by Walmisley, Stanford and Wood are the staples here with Tippett's the most ear catching of the other settings. The singing is bristling with vigour, if occasionally a touch rough textured. *** --BBC Music Magazine, Sept'14

St Paul's Cathedral Choir gives us a really fine and outstandingly sung collection of canticles, some of them quite familiar and others decidedly not. --IRR, Sept'14

For an ex-choirboy and current bass this recording lifts the spirits and allows (me) some happy nostalgia.

Musical settings of the canticles are among the great treasures of the Anglican and Episcopalian musical traditions 3 Jan. 2015
By A Customer - Published on
Musical settings of the canticles are among the great treasures of the Anglican and Episcopalian musical traditions. Most important among these, at least in the history of liturgical music, are the Magnificat ("My soul doth magnify the Lord") and the Nunc dimittis ("Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace"), which are normally composed as a pair of related works. Others among several more include Te Deum ("We praise thee, O Lord") and Jubilate Deo ("Praise the Lord") and Benedicite ("Bless the Lord"). The Choir of St. Paul's Cathedral in London, expertly directed by Andrew Carwood and accompanied by spectacular organist Simon Johnson, sing these quintessentially Anglican works with tremendous skill and energy. Those who know and love Anglican music will recognize the music of Stanford, Walton, and Wood; the "Mag and Nunc" by Michael Tippett is gleaming and spiky (the harmonies, not the sound) and I have enjoyed listening to it several times (along with the rest of the disk). Alec Roth's buoyant, rhythmic "Jubilate" must be hugely fun to sing, as it makes dramatic use of St. Paul's Cathedral's famous 13-second reverberation. I recommend this recording highly!
