I didn't expect to love this recording as much as I do. The songs themselves are of course beautiful but the orchestration is absolutely dazzling. I was particularly delighted and surprised to hear such an emphasis given to the wind section. The playing by the English Chamber Orchestra is marvellous and yet the recording is all about the music, something that Dame Kiri obviously took to heart here because, unlike some other recordings of Canteloube's Songs of the Auvergne, she, the singer, becomes part of the landscape of the music and doesn't attempt domination. It's gorgeous!

This is one of the benchmark recordings of Songs of the Auvergne, and one of Dame Kiri's biggest successes. Be warned however that this is one of the earlier Double-Deccas (1995) released before Decca started including the texts as standard with these releases.

This is simply a beautiful CD to listen to when you want to relax and evoke thoughts of summer and happy times. Kiri Te Kanewa's voice is clear and joyful - I don't listen to much 'classical' type music but this is music worth owning.

I heard this album on CD when it was first released and was overwhelmed. IMHO, it is the best Dame Kiri you will hear. The way that her voice emerges from the orchestra rather than simply attacking the first note, as others do, in the Shepherd's Song transports you to somewhere else. The orchestra's playing is flawless and has some of the best oboe I have ever heard.
Highly recommended!

There is sunlight in the vocal art that Kiri Te Kanawa brings to these songs. Isn't it amazing what a different effect that Marie-Joseph Canteloube de Malaret brings to these songs from the Auvergne compared with what Vaughan Williams, Holst or Grainger does with English folk songs. Canteloube brings tremendous art (filtered from Wagner through Vincent d'Indy) to the songs whereas the English seemingly leave their songs in tact. The art of the instruments of the orchestra is staggeringly beautiful whether the song is a trifle, serious or fanciful. I can't think of a more effective use of a piano within an orchestra. There are some well-taken wind solos in an excellent performance from the English Chamber Ensemble. I think that Kiri Te Kanawa enriched and beautified already lovely songs and the orchestra complements her role Finally there is the lively filler of Heitor Villa-Lobos - Bachianas Brasileiras No 5 with Lynn Harrell and other cellos. I always love this sound.

I came back to this recording having had it on vinyl but not played it for some time. I am not a very knowledgeable person musically, but this just sets my pulse racing. It is so pure and beautiful, it sets me up for meetings and helps me ponder problems. I realise that this is very subjective, but that's the only way I can deal with serious music.
