Having said elsewhere that I do not give five stars on principle, I will break my own rule. Together with "The Heart Trembles with Pleasure", "Cantabile" provides some of the most delightful playing of Weiss' music to which I have ever listened. Dare I hope that Professor North will record more works by Weiss, either from the London, Dresden or Moscow manuscripts, or perhaps from the recently discovered Harrach manuscript? I sincerely hope so because this was fabulous. Highly recommended.

Incredible Tone! 22 Oct 2013

Nigel North's Cantabile recording is one of the best sounding lute CDs I have in my collection. Nigel's 13 course Baroque lute sounds incredibly lush, full and rich. I was taken aback a bit when I first put the CD on. My wife even commented on Nigel's gorgeous tone captured on this CD. And for you fellow lute enthusiasts, according to the liner notes his lute is a 13-course lute by Lars Jonsson, Dalaro Sweden, 2011, after Hans Burkholzer 1959, remodelled by Edlinger Prague, c,,1719. The recording engineer, John Taylor, deserves some praise here, too. Well done!

Nigel's technique is very clean. You rarely hear any squeaks, string noises, or breathing. However, despite playing so accurately and polished, Nigel really breathes new life into these incredible 300 year old pieces by Sylvius Leopold Weiss who was a respected contemporary of J.S. Bach. This is a very difficult feat for any musician to accomplish and really is the holy grail for all musicians. Nigel's interpretations of these pieces are wonderful and inspired. He seemed to take the time to really get dialed into the character of each piece.

After hearing and playing Weiss's music on a modern classical guitar for years, there really is no substitute for hearing this amazing music on the instrument it was originally written for without any compromises. The incredible depth, richness and range of the 13 course lute is really something.

This CD was recorded in the amazing St. Andrew's Church, Toddington, Gloucestershire. Nigel has some excellent videos on YouTube where he is playing some pieces from this CD inside that beautiful Gothic stone church. What a great setting to record in! You can really see his lute in the videos, too.

Nigel put a lot of focus and attention on these pieces by Weiss and it shows. I'm sure Weiss is smiling down in approval on this recording.
