Tom Paxton's recording career has been going on for almost half a century now. He still writes, performs and records to the delight of a dedicated following.
However, most of Paxton's fans would argue that his Elektra output - seven albums released between 1964 and 1971 - makes up the core of his most important and influential material.
All of Paxton's Elektra albums haven't yet been re-released on CD [the first four have, as well as an expanded version of his last, live 2-LP set.]
For those who do not want to buy all of these Elektra CD's [or to find good copies of the other Elektra LP's], this generous 27-track collection (close to 78 minutes of music) is a must. The compositions are well-chosen ranging from delightful love and romantic songs to more topical material and to children song.
Tom Paxton voice sounds consistently good, his melodies are often recognisable and his poetry is commendable. Indeed, quite a few of these songs have become, in turn, true standards.
Paxton was always backed by top-notch session players and also benefitted from good arrangements.
Sonically, the CD faithfully reflects Elektra's recording ethos of the time, which means that the recorded sound is very good indeed. This comes as no surprise as Rhino has always received kudos for the way they handle the digital mastering of analogue tapes.
Although the song choice is well-balanced, it leans more towards his earlier acoustic recordings than towards his later, more electric folk-rock tunes. The latter songs, which are less well-known, should come as a nice surprise to those who listen to them for the very first time.
If you appreciate quality folk-songs, and still don't own anything by Tom Paxton - a true master of that genre - then this CD should really prove to be a godsend.
Enjoy.
