Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

By the time he hit his stride in 1974 with this chart-topping album, Barry White had firmly established his vocal persona on the contemporary music scene. No fewer than four top-10 R&B hits--two of which had been top-10 pop entries--and two gold albums preceded the release of Can't Get Enough and the man with the deep (and apparently golden) voice was a stealthy force. The allure of White--a Los Angeles native whose early years included a stint as an A&R man with a local record label--lay in his ability to craft relatively simple love songs and embellish them with luxuriant strings, a hard-to-beat rhythm section, and soulful background vocals. The combination is never more evident than on the classic title track and "You're My First, My Last, My Everything", an anthem that seemed to appeal immeasurably to White's ever-increasing pop audience. --David Nathan

BBC Review

Barry White’s third solo album, Can’t Get Enough was an enormous transatlantic hit and the one that cemented his reputation in the UK.

White’s was true music of the masses. With its lush orchestral arrangements and his sultry vocal, the seven-track Can’t Get Enough is his most accomplished work. All the songs could be either for long term-relationships or the first flush of a new romance: Oh Love, Well We Finally Made It; Can’t Get Enough of Your Love, Babe; I Love You More Than Anything (In This World Girl).

Along with Isaac Hayes and Marvin Gaye, White was in the top tier of soulful bedroom troubadours of the 70s. However, while Gaye and Hayes often introduced spiritual or social dimensions into their work, White was happy to ruminate exclusively on the subject of love. This has sometimes led to his material being undervalued, while the others have been exalted.

White’s manifesto was laid out in the album’s first three tracks: the beautiful instrumental opening of Mellow Mood, Part I segueing into the commercial pop perfection of You’re the First, the Last, My Everything and then into the 10-minute boudoir symphony of I Can’t Believe You Love Me.

You’re the First, the Last, My Everything was a classic number one. White’s praise of simple love struck a chord; "We got it together, didn’t we, we definitely got our thing together, isn’t that nice?" he drawls in his unmistakable bass tones. The instrumental break with Gene Page’s soaring strings is about as life affirming as music gets. It is still a guaranteed floor-filler all these years later, with one foot in country, the other in northern soul.

Can’t Get Enough… reached number four in the UK top 20 and became a rather ubiquitous addition to mid-70s households. It is a superb example of White’s craft. There were always strong morals behind his love raps, often espousing the joys of monogamy and doing right by your woman. Given all the love shenanigans going on here, it comes as little surprise that it has been said that more children have been conceived to White's music than that of any other artist.

By Mr. P. B. Koeb TOP 1000 REVIEWER

Yet again, i am surprised there is no review of this. Let's correct that anomaly, as Barry White's "Can't Get Enough" is a truly tremendous release. (Believe it or not.) Bookended by parts one and two of the instrumental "Mellow Mood", and never really putting a foot wrong. In between are the very familiar "You're The First, The Last, My Everything" and full-length "Can't Get Enough Of Your Love, Babe". (Although i prefer the "air conga" opportunity of the single mix.) But this album has so much more to offer than those two hits.

Purchasers may be a little disappointed that the running time is so short, and there is definitely better value to be had elsewhere. However, "CGE" features a few great moments which simply are not available on the plethora of Barry White compilations. There is the extended crooning of "I Can't Believe (That You Love Me"), whose ten plus minutes are too much for any standard compilation. "Oh Love, Well We Finally Made It" is possibly a bit more disposable, but definitely not at all bad. And there is also the lesser-known but lovely "I Love You More Than Anything, (In This World, Girl)", which does not feature on any of the regular compilations either.

All in all, "CGE" possibly represents Barry White's greatest album. His "What's Going On", dare i say it, even though many will find that statement to be sacrilegious. However, this is a very much better album than one might imagine, and definitely not worthy of anybody's contempt.

DVD 16 May 2012

I owned this dvd in its original vinyl form and remembered how much I loved it. The dvd did not disappoint and brought back many memories. The condition was excellent and sound wonderful. Many of the old favourites are there including a wonderful soulful track rarely found elsewhere - 'I cant believe you love me'. Just brilliant. The turnaround with my order was really fast and I received it a few days later.

Give Credit Where Credit is Due 29 April 2000

Alright, we know that White is a master vocalist, arranger, and lyricist. But, what other pop/R&B artist in the twentieth century played a harpsichord with such passion?

Don't know the instrument? Then, listen carefully to the magnificent "I Can't Believe You Love Me!" Man, this is the BOMB, a perfect blend of orchestration and vocal interpretation!

Hit the REPEAT function and enjoy!

Classic '70s Soul! 10 July 2003

My Mother has had this album since 1974, the year it was first released. I am so thrilled to see it available on CD now! Each song is excellent. Both "Mellow Mood" pts 1 and 2 are superb. Part 1 begins the album, while part 2 brings it to a close. They are perfect to begin and end this album. Barry really knew how to compose music, and this album is a testimony of that. I've loved these songs since childhood, and I still love them today. If you like Barry White and/or really good music, BUY THIS ONE!

Bittersweet 9 July 2003

I first purchased this recording back in high school on vinyl when Maestro White was coming into his stride with his melodic stirrings..Now that he has passed his music is even more beautiful with its smooth vocals and flowing instrumentals..My favourite track on this disc is I Can't Believe You Love Me - it is soooo sensuous..I spent this past weekend listening to his music over and over. And even though the man has gone to a greater place, his music and the moods he created will live on in the hearts of his fans forever.....
