If your garden is green-painted pavement with mature dandelions thrusting out of the fissures, and the focal point is the bindweed-adorned rusted bicycle frame gracing the corner of the plot, and you're happy with this, then this book is not for you. All others will benefit from reading this comprehensive manual for gaining and maintaining a garden to be proud of.

Whether you are an experienced gardener looking for new ideas, or a novice not quite knowing where to begin, have lots of time (and money) to spend or very little, and for everyone in between, there is something in this beautifully presented and well-thought-out guide that will help you to make your garden as lovely as those you have seen elsewhere and wished you could have. Written in unpretentious language that guides you step-by-step through each phase of creating a beautiful garden with your own unique "take," the book shows us that we don't need to copy anyone else's planting scheme or choice of materials, but instead it gives us the practical framework in which to express our own unique tastes and perspectives.

Have no doubt, John's book will get you there. And you will no longer be asking the title question.

This is a very informative easy read and contains sound advice for novice or experienced gardeners - something for everyone whether a keen gardener or a newcomer to the discipline. I wish I had read it a few years ago when I embarked on making a new garden.there are several ideas I could have used if I had known about them.
We await the sequel with baited breath!

This book is definitely the best garden book I've ever read. The author's friendly and easy- to-understand style and text is extremely helpful and a pleasure to read. I learned something new on every page, and picked up many useful tips that I will use in my garden to improve it considerably. I'd say it is suitable for all gardeners of any level of experience. I will be buying it as a gift for friends and family as it's such good value. Worthy of endorsement by RHS, and I hope John Shortland will be appearing on gardening shows, we need more real people like him demystifying gardening into an art we can all apply, thank you, John!

This is a beautiful book. I love the photography as well as the information within. It is easy to read and understand and I am sure holds wisdom for the expert as well as people like me who do not always know what they are doing. Its one I will keep out until winter and bring out again next year before I begin on my garden again. I will learn from it and try to put into practice what I discover. I live in Michigan, rather different from the beautiful English gardens but I still found a lot to entertain and inform me. Good book John.
