In 1989, prompted by a cocktail of cheap red wine and headstrong naivety, Rory Spowers and three friends set off on one of the most bizarre bicycle rides of the century. One year and two 278 punctures later, they had traversed the length of Africa on the Goodies's 1930s tandem and a mountain bike, retaining their sanity (barely), but minus one testicle and their preconceptions. Experiences ranged from starring as extras in a Clint Eastwood movie, being attacked by machete-wielding men and poisonous snakes, surviving regular bouts of malaria and travelling through some of the most beautiful lands in the world.

Rory writes a deeply candid and personal review of his trip taken with three friends up the continent of Africa. It is a useful insight for anyone planning a trip of this nature, as well as an entertaining read for the general reader.

(1) One of the best books I've read in my life (original Jerome's 'Three men on' both 'a boat' and 'a bummel' included). Congratulations, Rory!
(2) Absolutely stunning idea for a trip.
(3) A book about life, friendship, cycling, adventure and nature. What else would one need?
(4) I cycle a lot myself. The funny thing I found out reading this book was how many of the little stories the TMOAB experienced, do actually happen during most bike expeditions - creating games about cycling, eating as much as you can (when you can) etc. Many of those they described I could have never imagined, though!
(5) I only wonder whether Rory has stopped to smoke or not...

I agree with the reviewer who said this was one of the best books they'd read. Unlike that reviewer I am not a cyclist but this did not in any way diminish the enjoyment of this wonderful boys own style romp through Africa. I enjoyed it so much that I sought out an over priced second hand copy (it seems to be sadly out of print now) to give to a friend. Even if you are too young to know who the Goodies were (a 1970's TV comedy team from whom the bike in question came) you should still buy this inspiring and very funny book about 3 guys and their trip through Africa on a 'trandem'. Just make sure you are not eating when you get to the section about the 'crown jewels' related cycling injury!
