PIXMA MP970 Highlights

1pl Technology

Picolitre size

The size of the ink droplets can vary, and it is this that you quite often see quoted in printer specifications as a Pico litre rating (pl). The Smaller the nozzle jet, the tinier the ink drop, so the more detailed the print image will be.

7 Single Inks

Ink tanks/Cartridges

To minimise ink wastage and protect the environment, Canon’s Single Ink system uses transparent, individually replaceable single colour ink tanks. Each tank incorporates an LED that flashes slowly to indicate when ink is low, or rapidly when the tank is empty. To ensure hassle-free installation, the LED also indicates when a tank is incorrectly installed.

Easy Scroll Wheel

Scroll Wheel

The Easy-Scroll Wheel is rotated to operate the printer and make selections from the menu, displayed on a high quality colour TFT screen.

Auto Duplex Print

Auto Duplex

Built-in Auto Duplex printing capability is compatible with photo paper as well as plain paper feeding from both Rear Tray and Cassette.

Memory Card Compatibility

Digital photographs can be printed quickly and easily simply by inserting memory cards into the card slot. Most of the memory cards in the market are supported.

The prints quality are perfect. I made a photocopy of a a4 photo and printed it on an A4 glossy paper, the print out picture was so perfect you couldn't tell the difference between the original & the copy (it was a color photo), very impressive. I actually bought this multifunctional printer to print photos, and the photo quality is also perfect. It came with lots of more features which is a bonus. Its super quiet and very fast about 35 second for a photo prints. It's a pretty big printer, but its also a scanner ect. And you don't need to have it connected to a pc to do a photocopy and print out photos. It is as it says professional quality printer. Another thing is the printer doesn't use alot of ink for the actual prints which is remarkable because the prints are perfect. it's abit pricey but for everything it does i believe its good value for money.

I read the reviews on here before ordering. When I came to setup the printer on my LAN I was very surprised at how easy it was - I really do not know why the other reviewer had any problems at all. The manual explained it very well, the only annoying thing is that you cannot configure the IP address from the printers panel, you need a USB lead (not included) and to install a utility on the PC.
Also, you DO NOT need to have a PC switched on. I can easily print from my wireless laptop over the wired LAN (ie printer wired to router/hub).
The only downside is the physical size, it isn't small - check the dimensions (I didn't and it came as a bit of a shock)
The manuals are thick as they cover 16 languages with around 40 pages per language. They will not be featuring on my shelves.
Haven't found any information on the true cost of printing but a colleague said that Canon are fairly good ... here's hoping!
I would recommend this printer.

Print quality is great, as good as the photo lab I used to go to. The software is easier to use than previous versions. Many functions can be used without the pc. No linux drivers to speak of yet. It is not nearly as ink hungry as my previous printers.
1 problem though. It is Huge!!!! Its the mp610 on anabolic steroids. It will not fit on or near my desk. I fixed that with the the bu-20 bluetooth dongle. It now has its own place 10m away.

It works better than i expected aside from it's size.

Have owned an MP970 for several weeks. Installation on an XP PC was easy even though the CD suggested it was for Vista only. Printing black & white text and colour photos from the PC produces excellent results. Copying is fairly easy, though I still find the control panel a little unintuitive and the wife couldn't handle it at all (more than one button so too complicated for her). Scanning 35mm film negs was a little disappointing compared with my dedicated FS2710 scanner. This was odd because the MP970 should give better resolution (4800 dpi versus 2700) - images look slightly out of focus. Also, colours look rather "washed out" compared with the dedicated scanner. Comparisons done with the same piece of film, of course. Maybe I was expecting too much.
Still a good buy though and would do it again.

This, not so little, beast does it all and so far as I can tell does it all extremely well. I really wanted a wireless printer for the home network but setting this up wired on the LAN to the hub was easy once I had the correct info - unfortunately not all in the manual despite its size. A little googling, though and I had it all set up so that my main desktop handles all the main tasks up and down the LAN and the wireless notebook can print to it shared via the desktop machine. The only slight flaw here is that the desktop machine has also to be switched on but it almost always is.

As to all the multiple functions, well it's a Pixma Canon and as good as all the others in the series. I had thought of buying a slightly cheaper printer and getting a scanner as well but really it's all much more convenient, and has a smaller footprint, as an all in one solution.

An easy to use, well made product with quality output. Not at all disappointed!

I replaced my computer a 2001 HP Pavilion about six months ago with an Advent with Windows Vista. I kept the Printer/Scanner, a robust workhorse HP Office Jet G55, but despaired at getting the scanner function etc working simply and effectively. Decided to give the Office Jet to my son and invest in a new all in one. The Canon Pixma MP970. At around £200 it was £100 less than I paid for the Office Jet in 2001! Quite simply, this is a versatile and user friendly machine. I am looking forward to scanning my old 35mm negatives pre the acquisition of the digital camera. The lights in the ink tanks are a nice feature, particularly after it took me half an hour to realise I had to snap off the orange covers! Surprising that the USB 2.0 cable not supplied, but anyway I had one in stock.

I needed a new printer for a number of reasons. The Epson I'd had for about three years was refusing to use its magenta cartridge and also didn't talk at all to my iMac about cartridge levels etc. Similarly, I couldn't find a Mac driver for my old HP scanner, so it was a good time to consider an all-in-one, something I'd been reluctant to do in the past based on results about 10 years ago. Things have really come on since then. Desk space was also a consideration, although this is not a small item. However, the total footprint is, of course, much smaller.

Firstly, the third party supplier, Shima Uma was fine and the printer arrived in the early part of the delivery window. Setting up was simple. Time to print! Using glossy photo paper, I tried a few of my better photographs - horrible. They looked washed out and grainy. As I was unable to do anything about it the following day I tried again the following evening. After about the 6th or 7th print the output was stunning and has been ever since. I've no idea why it seemed to need a "running in" period but subsequent printing has been flawless. Ordinary text work is as you'd expect it to be, crisp, fast and of near-laser quality.

Using the MP970 is very intuitive and the navigation system using the buttons and wheel is simplicity itself. the accompanying software, Easy Photprint EX is also easy to use and matches the printer's output well to the paper.

The Scanning - brilliant! I've scanned in 35mm Slides, 35mm Negatives and existing (commercially produced) photographs. The resolution and colour rendition is excellent. OK, I get better quality from my digital cameras, but that's to be expected.
