Printer daytime activity
On average a printer warms up approximately 8 times each day

Canon’s unique Quick First-Print technology

Conventional laser printers need to warm up before being able to print and will often go through 4 stages of operation:

1. Wake up from sleep/stand-by mode
2. Warm up ready to print
3. Print the document
4. Return to sleep/standby mode

75% of all print jobs are 3 pages or less and, on average, a printer is required to warm up eight times a day. This means that with conventional printers you have to wait for them to warm up every single time you want to print - soon you’re spending more time waiting than working.

To resolve this, Canon has developed its unique Quick First-Print technology which saves time, energy and money by implementing 3 pioneering technologies into its printers:

On-Demand fixing
Canon On-Demand print technology
Click for a larger image

1. High Performance Controller: Canon’s high performance controller optimises processing time in both the PC and the printer ensuring higher compression rates and faster data transfer. Using less memory than conventional printers the file is rendered and ready for printing quickly and efficiently. With increasing usage of colour imagery and large files in business today, fast efficient processing is essential to overall output speed.

2. On-Demand Fixing: Before a conventional laser printer can print it must first heat up the fixing roller inside to a high temperature so as to melt the toner onto the paper which causes significant delay. With Canon’s On-Demand Fixing technology, a ceramic heater generates heat instantly, transmitting it through a thin fixing film so you can print immediately with no warm up time. This also means less cooling is required reducing fan noise and contributing to a quieter working environment.

3. On-Demand Toner (EF & S Toner): The specially designed Canon toners have a lower melting point and fixing temperature than other colour and black and white toners. Working in conjunction with the On-Demand Fixing, this results in 75% less power consumption than conventional laser printers making them more energy efficient.

Printer cartridge
All-In-One printer cartridges make replacement much easier

All-In-One printer cartridges

Canon’s All-In-One cartridge system includes toner as well as a photosensitive drum, charging unit, cleaner and developer all contained within a single unit which takes just seconds to replace with no mess or hassle. When replacing the cartridge you are also replacing all of these vital components ensuring your hands stay clean and your machine stays virtually as good as new significantly reducing any maintenance requirements.

Environmentally friendly

All genuine Canon toner cartridges are eligible for Canon’s toner cartridge recycling programme. This programme provides a free, easy and environmentally conscious way to recycle empty Canon toner cartridges. Just download your personal pre-paid return labels from Canon’s ‘e-Return’ site, print them and tape them to the cartridge boxes before posting. They each contain country-specific barcodes ensuring shipping-free postage of used toner cartridges to the nearest recycling plant.

What are the benefits to you?

  • Free recycling of your empty Canon toner cartridges, saving you the cost of ordinary disposal
  • Full regulatory compliance: All agents used by Canon hold the required licenses, giving you the peace of mind that your waste is being dealt with in the appropriate way
  • Canon assumes responsibility for recycling and recovering 100% of the toner cartridges that customers return. No cartridge returned through this programme ever goes to landfill
  • The recycling process enables parts and materials from the empty cartridge to be reused in the production of new cartridges

Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
The minor annoyances first. No USB connection lead is supplied. It is not a network printer so this is the only way of connecting it so why not supply one instead of supplying two mains leads one with a continental plug.
It is described as space saving and the depth is indeed much less than comparable black and white laser printers but the space is not really saved as you need to lower the paper feed from the front so nothing can be stored in front of it anyway. If positioned at the front of a desk this would be very vulnerable to damage. The unused paper after a print job cant be left in the paper tray as it needs to fold up after use so it will probably always be left down and charged with paper by the majority of users.
In comparison with a similarly priced black and white laser printer such as the Brother HL-2035, which I am used to, the performance as regards quality and speed was somewhat better on the Canon LBP6000.
The quality was determined using a Greyscale Linearisation Gray Gamma 2.2 chart. The steps were resolved slightly better on the Canon than my Brother HL-2035 using the highest quality settings. On the standard default settings they were identical in quality on printed words, greyscale pictures and test charts.
The printer unlike the Brother needs the power switch on the front switching on if the printer is powered off something I do not need to do with the Brother Printer. That aside it is ready and goes to sleeep quicker and almost silently.
Also compared to the Brother HL-2035 changing the cartridge on the Canon LBP6000 also changes the drum. I would have thought that that this was adding needless cost but the maths are a bit complicated and in fact it is almost the same.
A replacement combined toner and drum for 1,600 pages costs £58.98 a toner only for the Brother HL-2035 is £44 for 1,500 pages. With regard to the cost of replacing a drum on a Brother this would be £60 and only needed every 8 cartridge changes.
If you want an easier maintenance regime I suppose the Canon wins on this score especially as a Cleaner utility is run from the software by running an ordinary sheet of printer paper through which comes out as a corrugated sheet after cleaning is finished.
In conclusion I have always bought Brother Printers but my experience with the Canon LBP6000 will make this a favoured option.

Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
This printer is incredibly fast, quiet and efficient (both in terms of energy and ink) and it really fits the bill as an economic option for home or small office printing. As I personally don't really have any need to print anything in colour at home, but do print a large number of documents (word and excel mostly), which only require black ink - this is the perfect solution for me. Compared with most inkjet printers, it will save you money on ink with a laser printer such as this. Like most printers your initial starter cartridge prints less than your replacement cartridges, here the starter cartridge will print about 700 pages, but the standard cartridge will print a whopping 1600 pages. There is a greater financial outlay when purchasing a replacement cartridge for a laser printer, but you will get more for your money (and have to replace it less frequently, so if you are used to buying inkjet cartridges, don't be shocked by the price - a quick comparison of pages printed for your money will calm you down!) Canon CRG 725 - Toner cartridge - 1 x black - 1600 pages
This particular model has a fantastic sleep mode to save energy - it is automatically set to sleep after 1 minute, but you can alter this to your own preference easily. Unlike many other laser printers, it also has a really fast "wake-up" time, springing almost instantly to life again, so you barely notice any delay.
It really is much quieter than any printer that I have owned or used previously and as it prints so fast, any low level noise it does make is over in a flash - so gone are the days of loud and lengthy whirring and interruptions to conversations or phone calls!
It stands taller than most laser printers I have used, but it is not as deep, so that it can sit on most desktops without taking up half of the desk. Its precise dimensions are given as 359mm x 249mm x198mm (W,D,H), although you need to have space in front of the printer to allow the paper-tray to drop down (like a drawbridge.) The tray holds 150 pages of standard printer paper which could be left down and open, or you could remove the paper and close the paper-tray/door to prevent dust getting into the machine when it is not in use. The printer can also print on heavy paper, transparencies, labels and envelopes and adjusts to hold the size of paper inserted into the tray.
On top of the machine is a translucent cover, which opens out to collect the printed pages as they come out. As this is angled upwards at something like a 45 degree angle, the pages stack neatly without fuss. When not in use, this cover can be closed to prevent dust entering into the machine.
The printer is not quite as white as the picture seems to show, but it is still aesthetically pleasing, with an off-white colour and smooth rounded edges and lines. It is not cluttered with hundreds of buttons and lights, but just has the essential power button, power light and a paper indicator, which will flash if there is no paper or the paper can't feed properly and can be pressed to resume operations once there is paper available for the job.
Set up is easy and there is a very complete online guide (which you can have as an icon on your desktop for easy reference when required) which not only helps with basic troubleshooting and simple printing, but also more advanced printing options, such as layout printing, boarders and watermarks and so on and so forth.
The obvious downside to this machine is that it doesn't print in colour, which might be important for some, but if that isn't something you require, then I would whole-heartedly recommend this printer.
Finally, if you don't have a spare USB cable at home, do remember to order one, as like so many printers nowadays, sadly, it doesn't come with one included in the box!

I needed a compact mono laser printer to handle 350 pages at a time that would work well with a Mac.

The set up was easy and it worked well immediatly and has continued to do so.

The only draw back with printers of this type is thst every 1500 pages or so ylu have to spend 30-60 percent of the initial cost to buy a new cartridge. But given that 15 years ago the printer would have cost seven times as much - it a very good buy.

An unexpected bonus is that the printer is virtually dust free unlike many laser printers.
