From the title you might think I had a bad experience with Canon WP cases, not at all! I am a keen diver and go whenever the opportuity arises. So to record those dives I needed a camera. My first was an Ixus 400, then 700 and now a 960IS all of which went diving with me. In the first instance I destroyed the camera by rough usage and sold the WP case getting about 50% of the new price. Unfortunately I dropped the case for the 700 and finding no damage went diving, at 20 metres it leaked a svery small amount, the salt water destroyed the camera. I still had the photos though! The cases will take knocks and bumps and give no problems at all they are very robust. The flash diffuser is essential for flash photography in the peasoup that is an ocean and works exceptionally well. I found all the controls smooth and easy to use underwater, in real terms no different from taking photographs onshore. The quality of the photographs is not diminished by the case which gave no distortion. The microphone on video mode worked well giving very clear sound to the short videos I took. The only down side is that it is expensive compared to other manufacturers cases of the same complexity quality.

Every time I use this I can't help buy worry it's going to leak but it never has. I've used it as a splash case for kayaking trips and as a full waterproof case for surfing and snorkeling. The pictures and video are 100%. Some of the tropical fish photos I got in Hawaii were amazing, although the bright sun and clear water were contributing factors!

You have full access to every function the camera provides and the buttons are easy enough to use under water. I've never had the opportunity to try the flash so can't comment on that. I also haven't used any of the generic pouches or cases so can't compare with those. On long kayaking trips I've found that the temperature/pressure changes throughout the day can result in some condensation inside the case which will spoil some photos but that's not a fault of the product. That's just the nature of the environment. Lastly, the sound quality is severely affected by the case. This doesn't matter under water but you're not going to hear the crashing waves if you're taking video of surfers, for example. Minor detail, but one to note if that's your intended subject.

I'm going to hazard a guess and say the high price is due to the number of these that are sold. If they could produce them in higher volume then the price would drop but you have to accept that you're buying a luxury/niche product so you're going to have to pay for it. If you do decide to splash out for it (har har har!) then you won't be disappointed. Just read the instructions, keep the rubber seal lubricated and enjoy your Canon camera (I wouldn't buy anything else) in environments few other people can take theirs.

I've dived with this unit in warm blue and cold green water and given the housing it's unfair share of knocks.
So far not even a trace of a leak and the unit is easy enough to use with our without gloves.
It's just a shame I'm not a better photographer!

Great piece of kit. Used mostly for snorkelling so only been down to about 4m. The diffuser doesn't really help that much to avoid shadowing of small particles in the water, but that's the cost for not having a separate light source. All controls easily accessed.

Quite difficult to get the seal out to clean and lubricate.
