Great, but .......,
By B&B Owner (Cornwall, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Canon MX860 All-in-One Printer With Fax (4-in-1) and PictBridge direct photo printing (Electronics)
As I do quite a bit of printing for my B&B (menus, welcome notices, booking confirmations, etc.), I decided to treat myself to an upgrade from a basic Lexmark to the Canon MX860. So far, I'm pleased with it, but have discovered something I would've like to have known before I bought it, i.e. It doesn't print on card, the thickest paper it can go to is 105gsm. This means I have to hang on to the Lexmark to print brochures, visiting cards, etc., as double sided printing shows through 100gsm paper.
Also, Duplex printing is a bit obscure. Depending on your page setup, the reverse side sometimes comes out upside down, unless you go into "Page Setup" and set it to "staple top". It's not obvious what's changing the orientation on the reverse side, so can be a bit hit and miss. Apart from that, great so far. By the way, the first machine I got had a fault in that b&w printing came out with uneven patches. Amazon were efficiency itself in replacing it, and the new one works perfectly.

I have had this printer for a few days and am slowly discovering how to use it. I had a good look at the reviews before buying the printer and was convinced by the good reviews received. Must comment on one point though that surely the printer can print on thicker paper. I am currently printing on 220gsm and it prints great. You just have to read the instructions and realise that all the special paper is dealt my the rear feeder. Photo paper, thicker paper etc is printed through that. I was nearly giving up buying the printer when I saw the comment, as it is rather essential for me to do that. Look also on the Canon official spec and it will confirm it. The copy and printing is great, great colours and effortless was the remote setup. I did try to do a reduced copy without looking at the manual but did not manage, the front panel did not seem to have a intuitive option to do this, but it might be something less obscure than I think. Great buy overall.

Great multi-function printer,

Always been an HP user, but driven mad by software problems, I decided to try this printer, and am very glad I did. Compared to HP it's a doddle to set up, including wi-fi and fax. Full set of inks expensive to start, but then you can just replace the colour that has run out. So far seems to last longer than the HP too. Duplex printing doesn't jam, unlike my last printer. Scanning easy to use.
It's a big footprint, so more suitable for a home office, but I am really pleased with it, and the Canon software is intuitive. It even has a T Shirt transfer option, but do remember that this will reverse the image if you are using T Shirt creating software which also does that - yes, I did get the first one on back to front! Three methods of paper entry, back feeder, top holder above the glass plate, and bottom tray. You can fold away the back feeder if you wish, and if you are a tidy soul that likes to shut the front exit tray up, it will pop open when you start printing. Only downside I had was the difficulty in registering, this printer was so new that the option didn't appear on the Canon website!
