Useful and easy to digest "user guide" for the G16
on 20 September 2014
Note: The publisher provided me with a sample for review evaluation, the opinion of the book is my own personal view
This is the third guide book for cameras I have to review and like the other ones this uses the same format which I think is very easy to read and genuinely useful especially for newer users. Starting off the guide walks you through the body/controls of the G16 with the various settings available and providing a much better explanation of why you might find some settings use and when you might want to use them. All the menu settings are explained as are the various modes and functions on the camera.
Later on the book features an "in the field" section which is specific to the G16 this includes tips on exposure and a basic guide to normal photographic techniques including controlling light, shutter speeds and showing you how a histogram can benefit your photography other areas like raw are touched on briefly. This isn't a super in depth part of the book but it is worthwhile esp for less experienced users, more advanced photographers probably won't benefit much from this, but it never hurts to have a re-fresher. He also gives you an oversight of various accessories such as Canon flashes, some information on filters and tips on macro use among others.
At the back the glossary covers some photographic terms (I'd like to see a bit more in this section, but a minor niggle) Inside the front and back covers you have an 18% grey card and a Raw white balance card at the back there is a pull out foldable card showing the controls of the G16. Photos and diagrams are very clean and well presented and the text doesn't try to throw too many technical terms at readers. As an "expanded guide" the book works very well, but like many of these user guides are aimed more at newer users than experienced one, so if you are looking for a really in depth advanced guide this might not suit. However for the person I see it pitched towards it's really very well written and does a good job of explaining things.
