Bright f/1.8-2.8, 28mm, 5x zoom lens

Create sharper photos and movies with Intelligent IS and Enhanced Dynamic IS

You don’t need a steady hand to create stunningly detailed photos and videos. Canon’s Intelligent Image Stabilizer automatically selects the most suitable shake correction from 7 modes, while 5-axis Enhanced Dynamic IS provides powerful image stabilisation when recording videos on the move. Together, they allow you to capture sharp pictures and videos - even when shooting at full zoom or in low light.

Capture less noise and more detail with advanced HS System

Capture the natural atmosphere of the scene, with less noise and clearer details, even in low light conditions. Explore a wider range of shots, like portraits at night or moving subjects indoors, without having to worry about using a flash or stabilising the camera. Canon’s HS System combines a highsensitivity CMOS sensor and a high performance DIGIC image processor to offer increased dynamic range and deliver images and movies packed with atmosphere, even at high ISO sensitivities.

Capture all the action with super fast sustained continuous shooting

Don’t miss a moment of action with DSLR rivalling sustained continuous shooting, which captures still photographs at a blistering speed of up to 9.3 frames per second for up to a minute, when paired with compatible SD cards*. Capture the action with smooth Full HD Movies at 60 frames per second

Large PureColor II G LCD (922k dots) for superb viewing. An optical viewfinder lets you compose your shots in traditional style with improved stability.

Expert Control

Capture more true to life movie footage in 1080/60p Full HD with your digital camera. Canon’s DIGIC 6 processor enables you to shoot fast-paced action at 60 frames per second, giving you smoother and more realistic footage, whilst also offering more options when experimenting with slow motion playback on your PC.

Wi-Fi, GPS via Mobile

Wi-Fi lets you connect easily with home wireless networks, compatible printers and PCs, plus smart devices for easy online sharing and GPS tagging of your images with shooting locations. Image Sync enables convenient PC and online backup via CANON iMAGE GATEWAY or Flickr.

Star Mode

Using the increased processing power of DIGIC 6, Star Mode lets you capture stunning starry nightscapes with ease. Three shooting modes are available: Star Nightscape shoots landscapes against starry skies; Star Trails captures the movement of the stars by combining multiple images into a single composite image; while Star Time-Lapse Movie combines still images, taken at set time intervals over a long period, to create stunning movies.

Background Defocus

Background Defocus is a creative filter that mimics the background blur of images taken by an SLR with a wide aperture lens. It takes two consecutive shots, one in focus and one out of focus and combines them into a composite image with beautiful background blur. You can select from three different levels of background blur to achieve stunning portraits and close up shots with the exact blurring effect you want.

Handheld HDR

HDR Mode let you capture the dark shadows and bright highlights of a high contrast scene. Thanks to the speed of DIGIC 6, you can achieve HDR without using a tripod or fixing the camera on a steady surface. It captures a fast continuous sequence of shots, and then combines the data into a single file with the least possible blur and best possible exposure for images closer to how you saw them. You can also choose from 5 finishing effects: Natural, Art Bold, Art Standard, Art Vivid and Art Embossed.

Optional Accessories

Accessories include a 58mm Lens Filter Adapter, Canon Speedlite flashes and 40m Waterproof Case.

*Sustained continuous shooting – Continuous shooting speed and total number of frames captured varies dependent on camera model, shooting mode and subject. A compatible SDHC/ SDXC UHS speed class 1 memory card is required.

** Measurements conforming to new CIPA guideline. Conditions: P mode, Single AF (Centerpoint AF) under 14EV lighting

Using and comparing the G16 to the G15 there are some updated areas, and a few revisions (a few buttons and extra features)
The G series has always been a good solid camera, well featured and with nice image quality (for this sensor size). I've long been a fan of the series

Most of the big updates came with the G15 (ie the lens speed being so much faster)
The G16 in the hand is very close to the G15, it's a solid camera overall and nice to use. It isn't in most respects a huge update or a revolution over the older model.

I will summarise the updates over the previous G15 model

G16 improvements:
+ Has built in wi-fi
+ Video mode now supports 1080p full HD in 60/30fps v the 24fps of the older model
+ Max exposure time is now 250 seconds, compared to 15 seconds on the G15
+ You now have focus peaking on the G16 (this is pretty useful for manual focus)
+ New Digic 6 processor and improved faster burst shooting 9.3fps, a 5 shot 12.2fps mode (jpeg only) and raw cont shooting is a bit faster at just under 1.8fps (still not fast in raw by any means)

There are a few other improvements, a no tripod HDR mode, Background Defocus (similar to Fuji pro focus takes a few shots to help blur the background), Star time-lapse movie.

You get your normal filters like toy camera, minature, fisheye etc etc, though the Colour Accent and Colour Swap modes are gone from the G16

I don't really use these modes much.
Bar a few minor differences in buttons, the G16 is pretty close to the G15.

I have got this camera for 3 months and I am fully happy about it. I'm not a professional photographer and this is my first camera ever. The most important things for me were the camera should takes a high quality pictures, has manual mode and it is not huge dslr - this what g16 all has got.

The body build quality is decent. You can take one hand photo easily thanks to rubber finishes. Screen is is good quality also but not touching. Software settings are really intuitive and access to them is easy too.

You can record hd movies in 60 fps. There are also two stereo microphones.

Very pleased, agree with everything the other reviewers say, not sure if it's as good as the G12 yet... still playing with it. Already getting some very nice results. It's lighter than the G12, which is a plus.
My big problem is trying to download the soft-wear ImageBrowser EX - doesn't fully load, and the Canon people aren't that helpful. Not too worried - and I don't use that too often. Can't figure out the WiFI either - but I'm sure I'll get there in the end.

I received this Compact camera today. As an owner of several Crop sensor and full frame Canon and Nikon dslrs it took around 30 minutes to work out the features on this camera. I have to say that I am really impressed with the camera and the lens. I have had three Lumix TZ models which I consider superb cameras and still use. This Not so compact, compact has really surprised me. The camera behaves like a DSLR with the A,S,P,M modes plus intelligent Auto, scene modes. The focus is pretty quick in low light and fast in good light. The camera feels sturdy and quite heavy but then Canon have crammed a lot in here. The flash is pretty good too although I'll use a speedlite instead.
The G16 has plenty of features and gives the photographer plenty of control and I find the viewfinder handy as I wear reading glasses so sometimes using the big screen hurts my eyes if used too close. I really love this camera and I think I have found the perfect holiday, travel camera as airport security finally caused to explode on my previous holiday. " What's this sir?" " Its a camera....
The camera is not very compact and is aimed I believe at the more advanced photographer however I have already taken photos with it and have to say. Well done Canon you have made a superb piece of machinery. I was going to buy the Lumix TZ70 but am glad I got the Canon G16.

Canon G16: Fast delivery, thanks. For a long time, I have wanted better image quality than my super-zoom cameras, still wanted a viewfinder, wanted not to carry a bulky DSLR or extra lenses. I'm hoping to adapt to this Canon G16, and to obtain a better ratio of usable photos. Although not tiny or feather-light, this is a small camera which does not attract unwanted attention.

I do miss the bright clear accurate electronic viewfinders on my old super-zoom cameras, and miss the useful information shown in them. The optical viewfinder in the Canon G16 is much smaller and darker and covers only part of the image, so is only a guide. But in the lowish lighting of my typical photos, the extra stability gained by using a viewfinder means that the photos are less likely to be blurred. In bright light, the viewfinder is very useful. So far I have kept the rear screen on as well, to provide better framing info. Later, I hope to get used to the viewfinder and to keep the rear screen mostly OFF.

In one panic, the rear screen seemed to have stopped working except for brief flashes, so I reset the camera. Actually this was just a hidden feature: Clicking the bottom of the main circular control ring, cycles through the settings of the rear screen... including OFF.

I'm still very much exploring this camera, having downloaded its 220+ page PDF manual: Too small to read unless zoomed in; then requires horizontal as well as vertical scrolling. There are lots of unexpected features hidden in the various modes which re-use the various buttons in unexpected ways. Eventually, I hope to find a handful of favorite settings which suit most of my photography.

Using the default JPG image quality and a 32GByte class 10 SDHC memory card, this camera responds quickly.
