If you are looking at this camera I think it's very possible that you considered the all-singing, all-dancing market leading Super Zoom camera, the Panasonic TZ20 but have read reviews heavily criticising the Panasonic's image quality.

I have owned the TZ20 and this camera and my experience might be useful.

This camera gives better, clearer images in every situation than the Panasonic PARTICULARLY IN LOW LIGHT where the Panasonic is shockingly bad. The difference is extremely clear cut.

If IMAGE QUALITY is your priority - buy this camera (I did). Forget the megapixel count - to get the 14MP number, Panasonic has thrown image quality out of the window.

There are a few niggles with this camera - the flash seems to pop up all the time when you don't want it, the lens isn't as wide - 28mm against 24mm which makes a much bigger difference than you might realise and I rarely use the GPS on the Canon - it kills the battery (the GPS facility on the Panasonic is awesomely good and much more power efficient).

This camera was a purchase for me simply and singly because of the Image Quality issue - it feels a little old hat in terms of bells-and-whistles/gimmicks compared to the Panasonic but what is a camera for?

An upgrade for my wife from an old Nikon coolpix. This proved an inspired choice. My wife takes great photos and has an EOS 400D - so is happy using some of the more customisable features of this camera. In fact my wife was so delighted with this that she elected to take it to Vietnam on a recent holiday rather than her DSLR. Results were equally impressive although I think that in some ways my wife missed the more accessible control provided by a DSLR, and also the lack of a viewfinder meant holding the camera at arms length rather than a regular shooting pose with said DSLR.

However the camera delivers excellent quality images and is great for travelling and use as a compact. In conclusion - this is a great compact - but no substitute for a DSLR. So I have given 5*s as a compact rating.

The one essential extra for this camera is a spare battery - but you can pick up non-OEM spares for just a few pounds. There are smaller cameras around, but this is a neat design with rounded corners that is very pocketable. From an operational point of view, I still struggle sometimes with the operation of the 4-way button, which changes function depending on the selected mode. Maybe I will need to resort to the manual!

From the negative point of view, that's about it.

Zoom is incredible and gives excellent results. The many modes available help to produce great photographs. It isn't SLR quality but the picture quality is massivly impressive. I bought the camera just in time for a 2 week vacation and had little time to practice with it, but I have returned with lots of great photos and only struggled to get it to behave in a couple of challenging situations. The pop-up flash can catch you out sometimes - it will flash when you were wanting no flash, but it is much easier to just push the flash down to prevent flash assistance than it is to go into camera settings if the flash were not pop up.

So should you go for this, or the more feature rich competition? Well the features on this camera will keep you learning for some time, so why do you need more? And as for more megapixels - this camera produces good results because the lens is top notch - more MP doesn't automatically mean better quality pics!
