12.1 MP CMOS; HS System with DIGIC 5

The PowerShot S110 benefits from an enhanced HS System, incorporating a 12.1 Megapixel high-sensitivity Canon CMOS sensor with a DIGIC 5 processor, to deliver class-leading image quality in all light conditions and at up to ISO 12,800. The HS System allows users to capture the true ambience of low-light scenes at times like dusk, while maintaining the realism of colours, rich detail and minimum blur.

Versatile lens

Providing great flexibility to capture a range of subjects, the PowerShot S110’s ultra-wide, 5x optical zoom Canon lens delivers sharp results even in low light thanks to its wide, f/2.0 maximum aperture. The 24mm ultra-wide-angle is perfect for capturing sweeping landscapes or groups of friends while the 5x zoom allows users to approach their subject with ease and provides sufficient lens compression for beautiful portrait photography. When required, the 10x ZoomPlus can extend the zoom range beyond the maximum focal length of the lens, producing sharper image quality with more visible detail than conventional digital zoom

Intelligent IS
Intelligent IS technology reduces camera shake in both stills and movies

Intelligent IS

Intelligent IS automatically identifies the scene and can adapt the optical Image Stabilizer to seven different situations for optimal compensation, so footage remains smooth and stills are crisp, even when shooting at full zoom or with slower shutter speeds.

1. Normal IS: Camera shake correction for minimum blur in photos. It is powerful enough to give sharp results and good exposure in situations where a non-stabilised camera would have to use a much faster shutter speed to avoid shake.

2. Panning IS: Provides smooth framing on a moving subject – stabilising in one direction only when panning horizontally or vertically.

3. Macro IS: Optimises Hybrid IS when shooting from very short distance. Originally developed for professional Canon EF lenses, Hybrid IS provides ideal correction for sharp handheld close-ups.

4. Tripod Mode: Ensures optimum results in stills and movies when the camera is fixed on a steady surface, automatically turning image stabilisation off.

5. Powered IS: Provides steadier movie footage with greater clarity and less wobble when shooting with high zoom.

6. Dynamic IS: Corrects both hand shake and user-movement vibrations for smooth clear movies – such as when shooting from a car or walking along with the action.

7. Dynamic & Macro IS: Detects when filming from short distance and combines the corrections of Dynamic and Hybrid IS for sharper and smoother footage.

Stay connected wherever you are: Wi-Fi and GPS via Mobile

Wi-Fi* lets you connect easily with home wireless networks and PCs, as well as portable devices like smartphones and tablets – and use them for fast, convenient, online image sharing. Plus you won’t need a cable to print images on a compatible Canon Wi-Fi printer. Use your smartphone’s GPS to keep track of shooting locations then synchronise it with your camera over Wi-Fi to add this information to your images.

Lens Control Ring, Full Manual & RAW

A lens Control Ring allows quick control of functions such as zoom, aperture, shutter speed, focus or ISO. Shoot in Full Manual mode in RAW format with multi aspect shooting support, for maximum control over composition and post-shot editing using the supplied Digital Photo Professional software.

7.5 cm (3.0”) touchscreen

An advanced 460K dot capacitive touchscreen offers simple, intuitive gesture-based operation. Review and zoom in on images, select camera modes and use controls like Touch Shutter and Touch AF for quickly setting the area of focus, and pinching to zoom images when in playback mode.

Full HD Movies, HDMI-CEC

Full HD movies (1080p) can be recorded on the PowerShot S110 at 24 frames per second, with stereo sound, via a dedicated movie record button. When shooting footage, users can capture images with more definition and clarity thanks to Fine Detail Movie Processing, which uses the entire sensor when recording movies, allowing the camera to analyse and record the details in the scene with higher accuracy. An HDMI connection also allows both Full HD movies and stills to be enjoyed on HDTVs.

4.0 out of 5 stars CARTIER BRESSON WOULD HAVE HAD ONE OF THESE 20 Mar 2013
Colour Name:Black|Amazon Verified Purchase
If you need to read a more in-depth review then best look elsewhere. There's plenty of experts out there going on about pixies and stuff.
This review is based on my own experience, opinions and how my new S110 fits into my life and will hopefully enhance my own photographic skills. The S110 replaced my great and now sadly missed S90, which was a brilliant camera. The S110 is no doubt a wonderful piece of kit but it will take time for me to fully understand, let alone use, its amazing capabilities., but I'll be trying!

Since deciding to change cameras I've waded through endless expert opinions on why camera a) is better that camera b) but in the end it all became rather boring and indeed confusing. I have used Canon cameras for many years and each time I changed up I'd check out models from other manufacturers, sometimes I would buy these but I must say each and every time I end up with another Canon....however, see at the lend of this..!

MY plus points on the S110 :- a high quality production - metal chassis - made in Japan - tiny, even shirt ,pocket size - discreet (making it less attractive to `tea-leaves' )- produces fantastic results - avoids carrying those huge SLRs (most of anyway) alternatives.

MINUS points :- daft little on/off button (even smaller than on the S90) which is also too close to the shutter release - user manual on a CD when I would rather a printed version (which can be bought on eBay for £10.99).

Round-up - the S110 is a fantastic camera which suits me fine and reminds me of all those ½ frame Canon Demis I had in the 1960's. FOR ME it's the nearest to the perfect camera. If Canon comes up with a teeny weeny viewfinder (just to use when the sun spoils things *)I'll buy it.Thoroughly recommended, but watch out if you have big fingers!
*I tried one of those flip-out sunshades but it was hopeless, waste of money.

When buying a camera (or anything else for that matter) all we want to know is WHAT WILL IT DO FOR ME (AND YOU OF COURSE) ?

CASES - I recommend a Lowepro Napoli 30 which is remarkable value @£4-£5 on Amazon. The camera can be out ready for action quickly, which is important for me. The Napoli has a wide belt loop on the back in which I keep a spare battery. Inside the case there's room for a spare memory card but it might scratch the camera, so I don't keep anything in it except the S110.

UP-DATE - after a few days (I am retired so have plenty of time)fiddling with my now much loved but slightly intimidating S110 I am having great fun (surely that's the whole idea?)discovering all the options (via my printed user manual)buried deep within its tiny frame. I now know I made the right choice buying the S110 rather than the S100 as suggested by others. One thing I learnt many years ago was when given the choice always go for the best you can afford.. From past experience when checking out one camera against another I've learnt to avoid a cheaper alternative otherwise after a short while you'll think "I wish I'd spent that extra few quid".Quality remembered long after price is forgotten. as the man said.
UPDATE (yes, another one) - Having now had the S110 for a few weeks I think the battery doesn't hold the charge very long, unlike my S90 which lasted much longer so I'll be buying a 3rd battery, which is slightly annoying. After all, the idea of a tiny camera is that you don't have to carry extra bits around, no matter how small they might be.

CONCLUSION - HIGH QUALITY - BRILLIANT PERFORMANCE - QUICK SILENT ACTION - SMALL AND ABOVE ALL DISCRETE - I really don't want an SLR (but might go for a system Compact sooner or later) all far too big and cumbersome)and the S110 comes close to perfection , very close. So as far as I am concerned the Powershot S110 is the best small cameras available.

CONCLUSION #2 - CANON - I bought this camera on March 15th and it was delivered a few days later. AT THE TIME Canon were offering a £20 cash-back so I immediately applied on-line, fine. TODAY is MAY 9th and the cheque has only just arrived in this morning's post!! Come on Canon, you're big boys now not a local corner shop pushed for cash.

I HAVE JUST BOUGHT A NIKON V1 Twin-zoomer as a companion for my S110. I have opened the box (always exciting) and.....well I'll go in to that in due course, but it looks and feels a winner AND IT'S GOT A VIEWFIDER! I have made a first-look review elesewhere if you are interested in my ramblings....

4.0 out of 5 stars Canon PowerShot S110 11 May 2013
Colour Name:Silver
Canon PowerShot S110: A full-blown PowerShot with plenty of manual controls and Canon's HS system for improved low-light performance.

Pros: Great little camera, easy to use, built-in Wi-Fi, raw shooting, fast maximum aperture, plenty of manual controls, excellent image quality, very well-suited to low-light

Cons: expensive, wind noise on movies, no grip on the front of the camera, no built-in GPS

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for taking indoor pictures 16 April 2013
Colour Name:White|Amazon Verified Purchase
We were looking for a neat little digital camera that had a wide-angle lens, specifically to photograph interiors, in order to sell a property. It is very easy to use (my wife was concerned that it should be) and we are very pleased with the pictures it takes. You must ensure that you wait a few seconds and keep very still in order for it to adjust its focus perfectly. It does seem to pick up on shadows but the clarity is very good. Not used it a great deal yet but have to say we have no complaints so far. It has turned out a good choice for us.
