With a lightweight, super-slim body of just 29.5mm and highly advanced capabilities, the PowerShot S95 is perfect if you’re serious about photography but need the flexibility of a pocket-sized compact. Image quality is superb thanks to the advanced HS System and higher ISO speeds, plus an exceptionally bright f/2.0 lens which makes portraits and low light shots really come to life. It also features a 3.8x optical zoom on the 28mm wide-angle lens, allowing you to capture those intimate group shots with ease.
An innovation to Canon’s compact range, the PowerShot S95 is the first to feature Hybrid IS, a groundbreaking technology designed to offer improved image stabilisation performance during macro photography and night-time shooting. It prevents image blur by counteracting both angular and shift shake which becomes more pronounced during macro photography. It also enables you to capture high-quality shots in darker conditions by shooting at a shutter speed approximately 4-stops slower than would otherwise be necessary. The result is blur-free clearer images whether up close or at night.
The PowerShot S95 boasts a variety of shooting modes which give you the freedom to take highly creative and unique shots. One of these is High Dynamic Range mode, which tackles high contrast scenes for a natural quality. It works by shooting the same scene with three different exposure levels, before analysing and combining them to create a single image in-camera. The result is an image that captures both highlight and shadow detail.
The Powershot S95 features the powerful Canon HS System which combines a 10 Megapixel high sensitivity sensor with Canon’s advanced DIGIC 4 processor. The system allows for excellent high image quality, especially in low light conditions. The increased sensitivity of the HS System allows it to capture a wider dynamic range, reducing highlight blowout and loss of detail in shadows. It all adds up to a remarkable quality of image in all light conditions – enabling you to preserve your memories in perfect detail, whether in stills or video.
The Canon HS System truly excels in low light conditions. Capturing well exposed subjects inside, against dark backgrounds or outside in low light can be difficult. The flash range is not sufficient to light up the background but turning it off can cause blurring from the instability of handheld shooting. With the Canon HS System, background illumination is improved, dark areas are reduced, and camera shake is controlled – maintaining complete image clarity and eliminating blur.
The HS System allows for significant noise reduction at all ISO levels while maintaining accurate colours and crisp detail. The camera also supports a maximum ISO speed of 3200 at full resolution, while an extended maximum speed of ISO 6400 is available at 2.5MP resolution, allowing the camera to capture the natural ambience of dimly-lit environments without the flash.
The PowerShot S95’s enhanced lens Control Ring enables the manual adjustment of various shooting settings such as ISO, shutter speed, aperture, focus and exposure compensation with an effortless twist of the ring. The Control Ring can also be used like a manual zoom offering a closer view of subjects in 28mm, 35mm, 50mm, 85mm and 105mm steps. In new Nostalgic Mode it can add an aged effect to the shot, from a subtle faded look to full grainy black and white.
The ring features a more pronounced ‘click’ mechanism, preventing any unintentional changes to settings, and the positioning of the Ring Function. A dedicated shortcut button can even be configured to provide instant access to pre-selected functions, offering you easy access to settings during shooting.
The PowerShot S95 is fitted with a wide aperture f/2.0 wide-angle lens to help you take full advantage of the HS System for superior low light performance. The f/2.0 wide-angle lens allows twice as much light into the camera as an f/2.8 lens, enabling you to use faster shutter speeds to reduce blur or field depth, and freeze subjects mid-movement. It’s perfect for creating enticing portraits, by drawing attention to the face and blurring the background with its impressively shallow depth-of-field.
The PowerShot S95 features upgraded Smart Auto technology which automatically analyses shooting conditions and applies the scene most suitable for your frame, now from 28 specific variables – so you focus on capturing the perfect shot. It also detects movement of subjects in a scene, activating Servo Auto Focus and Auto Exposure to ensure that the focus and exposure are locked onto them if they move. With Smart Flash Exposure, flash levels are controlled according to shooting conditions, ensuring perfectly exposed shots in all situations.
Multi aspect shooting with the PowerShot S95 enables you to set the format of your image before you take a shot. Choose from 3:2, 4:3, 1:1, 16:9 and 4:5 formats according to how you want your final image to appear. There is no need for post-processing, so you could build a collage on-screen and print it immediately on a SELPHY or PIXMA printer with TFT screen.
For moments that are better caught on video, the PowerShot S95 offers advanced video performance with the capability to record HD movies at 720p. Optical zoom is available during shooting, allowing speeds of up to 30 frames per second - and stereo sound guarantees clear, CD-quality audio every time.
The lens’ quiet motor allows you to zoom during recording with minimum audio interference, while the intelligent Dynamic Image Stabilizer is designed to reduce the effects of camera shake if you need to move with your scene. Using the various shooting modes in movie can add an interesting dynamic to your footage. In Smart Auto mode, the camera automatically analyses conditions and selects the optimal settings from 28 different situations - so you don’t have to. And Miniature Mode adds a completely new dimension to video – resulting in dramatic and compelling miniature-style, timelapse videos.
To help you capture the perfect shot, the PowerShot S95 includes a large 7.5cm (3.0") LCD display, which features Canon's PureColor II LCD technology. It features a wide viewing angle for greater visibility, even when shooting in bright conditions. You can even frame and review images easily thanks to an exceptionally wide viewing angle, 461k dot resolution and great colour rendition.
The fast processing capability of the DIGIC 4 processor facilitates a range of technologies which enhance the quality and creativity of your images. It enables intelligent evolved Face and Object Detection Technology, which finds and tracks moving subjects until you're ready to shoot, adjusting the camera settings for optimal results. Faces will have natural-looking skin tones and additional Blink Detection lets you avoid the disappointment of mis-timed people shots by displaying a 3 second warning if a person in the frame has their eyes closed. Red-Eye Correction is an integral feature to ensure flawless photos as well as Canon’s i-Contrast feature, which offers improved contrast and greater detail in tricky lighting conditions.
Capturing self-portraits has never been easier with Smart Shutter, which utilizes Face Detection Technology, allowing you to trigger the shutter using a smile or a wink of the eye. With Face Self-Timer, you can set the camera to shoot automatically after detecting a new face in the frame, meaning nobody’s left behind in group shots. And if you’re at a more advanced level and require additional levels of creative control, the PowerShot S95 also offers control over shutter speed or aperture settings in Tv and Av modes respectively.
Because Canon understands that taking photos is only half the fun, it supports both SDXC and Eye-Fi memory cards. With storage of up to 2000 gigabytes, the SDXC card allows you to snap away without worrying about running out of memory, and the Eye-Fi model lets you transfer pictures and videos online, directly from your camera, via it’s own Wi-Fi transmitter. You can also use the mini HDMI cable to play your HD videos on widescreen TV or send them wirelessly to your own PC.
For fast and easy uploading of your clips to sharing websites like YouTube, Easy Web Upload software is included free in the box. This will display your movie clips and can also store your YouTube log in details – so you can simply select your clip and upload with one click.

The camera I always carry,

I have a canon 40D DSLR to judge things by.I bought this as a camera I will always have with me when the DSLR is to heavy to carry. The quality of the images is everything I expected from other reviews. I wanted a camera to shoot RAW as does the 40D and this does a great job ,allowing processing later on. Not having a view finder is the price you have to pay for a camera this small. I would prefer a viewfinder for better composition especially in bright light. The level of control is almost up the same level as my DSLR which is what I wanted. The screen is large and of a high resolution to review shots. You can also run a slide shows on the camera screen. Movies can also be viewed on the screen I have used ISO 800 and found little noise. In low light you get good results using F2. I have tested the flash which works fine,so far I have not needed to use it allowing F2 and ISO 800 to give enought light. The HD movie is a good bonus. It takes clear movies with fair sound, just dont be erratic with the camera zooming in and out and swinging quickly round. I have used the camera mostly in Av mode and get a level of control close to DSLR The menus are simpler than DSLR but give what you need and are fairly easy to use. The front ring is easy to configure to different functions and is good The zoom lever is small and does not give easy control The build quality is top class. The surface finish has a roughness to it that helps grip the camera. Do fit the strap and use it over your wrist to ensure you don't drop the camera. The Crumpler pp70 case fits the camera perfectly. This is a tight case so you can still get into your pocket. The canon G12 is the obvious other camera to consider. It is a great camera using similar technology to the S95, however it is to big to go in your pocket. This is as good as you can get in pocket size cameras and is aimed and people who want near DSLR quality but small enough to take everywhere Canon PowerShot S95 Digital Camera (High Sensitivity 10 Megapixel, 3.8x Zoom, 3.0 inch LCD Screen)

Exceeds Expectations!,

I held off buying a new camera for a long time, partly because my 5 year old ixus 50 was still clinging on, and partly because I didn't know what to go for next.I had three boxes to tick: small, much better in darker/indoor conditions than my ixus, and preferably a Canon. I'm not generally one for sticking to a particular brand, but having tried out my friends' cameras I always found the menus a bit clunky, and thought I'd better stick to what I know. The S90 seemed to be reasonably priced, and ticked all the boxes; I initially held off, thinking the price would come down when the S95 was released, and didn't even consider the s95 as I wasn't really fussed about HD recording. When the price finally dropped under £300 last weekend, though, I had a look at some comparisons between the two cameras - the S95 is marginally smaller, and seemed to be producing clearer, sharper shots almost every time. Since it now cost less than £20 more than the S90, I thought I might as well take the upgrade! My camera arrived today, with its battery fully charged. I've spent a few hours playing with it, and I'm pretty impressed. I'm not a pro, in fact I've never laid my hands on a DSLR (realistically I know I could never be bothered lugging the thing about), but this camera is probably as good as I'll ever need. Its performance indoors (without flash) is pretty amazing, and it feels well built, too. There's a familiar range of old ixus features: underwater, my colours, colour accent and swap, and some new ones like miniaturising and posterizing. They're all easy to use, and although gimmicky, work better than you'd expect. Smile, face, blink and wink detection all seem to work pretty well too, although my boyfriend's patience limits the amount of testing I can do! Although HD wasn't my motivation for buying this, it really is impressive. The picture is steady and clear, even in darker conditions. I don't have much means for comparison, but watching the video playback on my laptop was comparable to watching the higher resolution shows on the iPlayer. Cons? Well, I can understand the concerns about the flash - I do tend to hold my hand over it, and always get a bit of a fright when it pops up. I doubt it'll be a problem once I've had a bit of practice though, and although I'll be a bit worried about dropping it when using it outside, it definitely wouldn't put me off buying. Also (not a criticism of the camera itself), if anyone's considering buying the matching Canon case for this, I wouldn't recommend it - I think it bulks the camera out more than necessary, and I'll be keeping an eye out for an alternative. All in all, I'd recommend this camera to anyone who wants a small compact with lots of features and manual options - everything I was looking for, and then some.

Excellent...ticks all the right boxes,
This review is from: Canon PowerShot S95 Digital Camera (High Sensitivity 10 Megapixel, 3.8x Zoom, 3.0 inch LCD Screen) (Electronics)
I've been waiting for a camera like this for many, many years. Having worked as a pro, I wanted a pocket camera in which I could gain full control, and with full manual settings on the S95, I have that. I especially love the white balance feature, which can be assigned to the front ring, excellent for indoor and for mood. In fact there are so many features I could harp on about, but the proof was in the test shots I took today, great macro at f2.0 with brilliant colour saturation on plant photos; the camera dealt brilliantly with the extremely harsh contrast scene I found (brilliant high colour temp white sky, with darkened buildings on the bottom 1/3rd & church steeple in the middle), after a few experiments, it came out best on, would you believe, the programmed landscape scene option! Anyway, there is so much to praise, I will therefore only mention the very few gripes. Careful with the flash (which can be reduced by up to 2 stops, Highly recommended that the user should try this!), I've managed to drop the camera twice now when turning the flash off, as it reduces back into the body with a lot of force, I'll get used to it, but the user needs to be wary of this at first. The battery life seems a bit short , but maybe I've just been playing with it a lot. At last, digital has finally caught up to where film was 10 years ago.
