Rich razor-sharp images - every time
The lens is the most important part of any imaging device and all Canon cameras incorporate lenses designed and manufactured by Canon - lenses based on over 60 years of experience for outstanding results. Canon’s market-leading Optical Image Stabiliser is a lens-shift system that automatically detects and corrects camera shake, whilst ensuring outstanding image quality. It allows handheld shooting at longer focal lengths and in lower light conditions without blur, giving you steady, crisp, brilliant images you’ll be proud to shoot and share. Developed initially for Canon’s EOS Digital SLR cameras in 1987 it is the fastest in-lens image stabiliser available on the market and ensures the PowerShot range has a top quality pedigree.

The big 10 x optical zoom lens on the PowerShot SX120 IS lets you get up close and personal, whether you are shooting landscapes or a child’s smile - straight optical paths delivering razor-sharp precision with lifelike colour every time.

Meanwhile a resolution of 10 Megapixels allows you to capture every scene in rich detail, ensuring oversize prints – even of cropped pictures - retain high image quality.

Fast, intelligent processing even in tricky lighting conditions
Canon’s most advanced image processor, DIGIC 4, lies at the heart of every Canon digital camera and delivers exceptional processing speeds, responsive operation and advanced noise reduction. It also makes possible intelligent evolved Face and Object Detection technology, which finds and tracks moving subjects until you’re ready to shoot, adjusting the camera settings for optimal results. Faces will have natural-looking skin tones and additional Blink Detection lets you avoid the disappointment of mis-timed people shots by displaying a 3 second warning if a person in the frame has their eyes closed. Red eye correction is also an integral feature to ensure flawless photos.

A Face Detection Self-Timer also makes group photos and self-portraits easy. Once the shot has been set up, the camera records the number of faces detected in the frame when the shutter is depressed and the self timer started – it then waits for an extra face to get into the frame and adjusts focus and exposure before it takes the picture.

DIGIC 4 also makes possible Canon’s i-Contrast feature, which offers improved contrast and greater detail in tricky lighting conditions. Available in either shooting or playback mode, i-Contrast analyses the exposure, dynamic range and other image characteristics of a shot then adaptively increases the gain in dark areas to produce heightened detail in those regions. It does this without blowing out correctly exposed parts of the image, while the noise reduction function of DIGIC 4 ensures minimal noise in the adjusted areas.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very capable little camera 12 Feb 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this camera as a replacement for my much loved Canon Powershot A610 which died suddenly for no apparent reason. It's also a backup for my Nikon DSLR and a general take-anywhere camera for those situations where a DSLR is either impractical or unwelcome. I wanted a camera with full manual control as I was used to having that with my old Powershot and with my DSLR and this camera pretty much ticks all the boxes.

Pity it doesn't shoot RAW but you can't have everything. I like its size - not too small and fiddly like a lot of compacts - and the flash is pretty powerful and much better placed as a "pop up" than the flashes on most cameras in this category. The zoom range is also great although I'd have liked it a little wider at the wide end and with image stablisation it is a superb medium telephoto camera.

Images are clear and sharp and with the usual slight oversaturation of Canon Digic processing. Shooting options are a little bewildering in number and just a tad gimmicky, however since I tend to keep it in aperture priority 60% of the time, they're probably not going to get used.

Dislikes really relate to battery use and recycle times for the flash. This camera EATS batteries to an extent I've never experienced before. I quickly stopped using my 2100mAH Ni-MH rechargeables and bought some 2800mAH instead and these seem to last a lot longer, however I always carry a couple of spares. The flash recycle time is also bettery-related in that it seems to take ages to suck power out of those batteries, therefore repeated quick flash shots are a no no. Why this should be is a puzzle as I use the lower power rechargebles in my Nikon SB600 speedlight flashgun and not only is its recycle time very fast, but the batteries last for ages.

So in summary, a good all-round compact with most of the features you'll ever need but with some slight caveats relating to power consumption. The price is excellent. I just hope it doesn't die like my old Canon did.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Camera - Needs more power! 9 Oct 2009
A great camera with brilliant definition. The ease with which you can change between settings is excellent and works really well. If I have one moan, it is the rate at which it goes through batteries. The camera drains the juice at a horrendous rate and regularly requires the batteries changed. I understand that lowering the quality of the pics would have impact on the battery usage, but I have put up with it so far! That aside I really like the camera and am very pleased with my purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars Canon SX120 IS Digital Camera 2 Oct 2009
By J. Bird
This is my sixth digital camera and personally I have always believed in the ability of up to date technology so its no real surprise to me to see an improvement. This camera is the definition of this IMO. One month later and 600+ pictures later I am staggered at the advance. My last camera a Canon A720 IS was and still is an absolute gem but is blown away by the quality of this new model. Image quality, depth of field, saturation and sharpness are all miles better. And for the £££, well the value for money is amazing! Highly recommended.
