Optics and resolution: the PowerShot G5 uses a 5.0 Megapixel CCD sensor, providing a file with 2,592 x 1,944 pixels for stunning clarity and colour in even your biggest enlargements of up to 20x30 inches in size. Primary colour filters reduce noise while enhancing the natural colors of the scene photographed. At the heart of the PowerShot G5 is Canon's powerful 4x optical, 4x digital zoom lens. With a 35 mm equivalent range of 35140 mm, a large maximum aperture of f/2.03.0, and macro focusing down to two inches, there's virtually nothing this lens can't do. A 4x digital zoom feature extends the telephoto capabilities even further, effectively making it a 16x zoom.
The PowerShot G5 achieves sharp focus with both single and continuous focusing systems, perfect for any photography from sports to still life. With two types of AF (including FlexiZone, where the user defines the focus point anywhere in the composition) and a unique focus-bracketing feature, the PowerShot G5 can achieve perfect focus anywhere.
Storage and transfer: images are stored on CompactFlash Type I or Type II cards in uncompressed RAW format or one of three compressed JPEG formats. The camera uses a USB 1.1 interface and also outputs NTSC or PAL video with monaural sound. It can connect directly to Canon Card Photo Printer and select BJ Printers.
Movie mode: it is possible to record video with mono sound in either 320x240 or 160x120 resolution. Total recording time varies depending on the size of the installed storage media, but individual clips may not exceed three minutes in length regardless of the available storage space.
More features: the G5's DIGIC Imaging Processor revolutionises the shooting of digital by allowing the camera to process images faster and improving the accuracy of the autofocus. DIGIC also reduces the effects of noise in your images. The camera also incorporates Canon's iSAPS scene-recognition technology. Using an internal database of thousands of different photos, iSAPS works with the fast DIGIC Imaging Processor to improve focus speed and accuracy, as well as exposure and white balance.
Other features include:
Power and size: the G5 uses an included rechargeable lithium-ion battery that allows for up to 360 minutes of playback time or enough time to take approximately 450 pictures with the LCD turned on. The camera measures 4.76 x 2.91 x 2.75 inches and weighs 14.5 ounces without batteries or storage media installed.

However, any reservations I had soon disappeared as I started to use it. It is immensely versatile, reasonably intuitive, and the results are excellent. I soon found myself using many of the more sophisticated features, and was delighted with the creative possibilities this allowed.
Shutter lag is a slight problem, particularly in low light conditions. However, once it has sorted itself out on focus and metering, the response is very quick.
A great lens and 5M-pixels makes for excellent photos - the detail is remarkable and I've experienced no problems with chromatic aberration.
The battery is also outstanding - I've just returned from a wedding where the camera had a real pounding - 300 photos over 3 days (at least 50% with flash), several video clips, LCD used almost all the time and much reviewing of results on the screen. All done without recharging the battery. The only downside is that you get very little warning of when the battery is about to give up, so while it seems to last forever - you could be caught out. I don't know how much a spare battery would cost, but it would be worth having one to be on the safe side.
Overall, if you want a simple camera for everyday family photos etc, you may be better off looking at the much more compact S50, IXUS or other brands. These are the sort of cameras you can carry anywhere for spur of the moment photo opportunities.
If you want a top quality camera that can function in any role from a simple (and flattering) point-and-shoot, right through to a very sophisticated piece of equipment with amazing levels of control and customisation, the G5 is outstanding and I can't recommend it too highly.
(1) Lens Barrel in viewfinder
You will often read that the lens barrel intrudes into the viewfinder because it is too close... well you WANT the viewfinder to be close to the lens to avoid parallax error right? (yes of course you do) Anyhow go dig out your Dad's old Olympus Trip 35 and you will see the lens barrel visible in that viewfinder too....and he didnt have a sexy LCD fold-out monitor did he?
(2) Built in flash
The flash is 'OK' and bordering on 'sucks'. Good for fill in and snap shots only. There is a hot shoe so Canon's own Speedlites can make a huge difference to your images. Most other digital compacts also have awful flashes so if this is important make a note of which ones have a hotshoe so you can do something about it with an external flash unit.
(3) Purple fringing
Purple fringing (you will have read about that on the G5 if you have done your homework) can be helped with a different aperture and use of the wonderful Neutral Density filter that is built in. Again, most digital compacts of 3/4/5M have this to some extent so get used to the work around. Anyhow you may find with the pictures you take you never see this effect anyhow.
(4) Size & weight
The G5 always gets classed as a Compact and there I would disagree. This is more in the feel/size of a traditional rangefinder camera. Yuo will not be putting this in the pocket of your new Top Man pants and going down town for a boogie. It will need to be in a camera bag (alongside your Leica gear of course) for that wonderful 'Hey I'm an Amateur Photographer!' feeling.
(5) Its just an overhyped G3 isnt it?
Not for me. This is a better camera overall, both in image quality and a sexy black body rather than the G3's silver. The LCD is higher resolution too and the shutter lag has been reduced from the G3.
Despite these negatives the overall performance still demands 5 stars for handling, picture quality, lens, feel and that flip-out LCD. Oh and the black body colour. Class.
Keep in mind that all the current 5M digital cameras have shortcomings, those on the G5 seem to have been hyped up more than other cameras but this still for me rates as the best of the crop. In addition with the latest price from Amazon... its cheap.
Do your homework and you will make a good choice. And if you have small hands, get the Sony DSC-V1, play with it and you will see why.
Firstly, the moment that you start to handle it, it oozes quality. Read more
