When you're taking pictures, the only thing you want to think about is your subject. Setting the PowerShot A495 to Smart Auto mode allows the camera to intelligently select the appropriate settings so you can do just that. Advanced Scene Detection Technology automatically analyses shooting conditions - detecting people, distance, brightness, colour and movement information - then selects the perfect settings from 18 specially defined scenes. So whether you're photographing flowers, fireworks, a captivating sunset or friends in the park you can be confident you're getting the perfect image.

But Smart Auto is more than just scene detection. With moving subjects Servo Auto Focus/Auto Exposure (AF/AE) is in continuous operation so they are always in focus and correctly exposed and you never have to miss a shot. For close ups the camera automatically switches to macro mode for sharp shots while Smart Flash Exposure optimises exposure and flash controls to ensure your subject is perfectly lit and dark and light areas are accurately reproduced.

Choice of manual shooting modes
With the PowerShot A495, you also have the option of selecting from a range of manual shooting modes that you can count on for exact focus no matter where your subject is in the frame. Simply select the mode you want and let the camera take care of everything else, ensuring breathtaking, exhilarating pictures even when shooting conditions are tough. A special 1cm Super Macro mode even allows you to capture small-scale detail from as close as 1cm away.

There are also two new photo effect modes: Super Vivid, which adds vibrant colours to photos for a dramatic result; and Poster Effect, which gives a retro feel to photos by creating a poster-like effect.

Improved shots in tricky lighting situations
The PowerShot A495 features a new low light mode for use in places such as museums, parties and candlelit restaurants where you can't, or don't want to, use flash - automatically allowing you to capture atmospheric shots.

Meanwhile Canon's i-Contrast correction offers improved contrast and greater detail in tricky lighting conditions. Available in either shooting or playback mode, i-Contrast analyses the exposure, dynamic range and other image characteristics of a shot then adaptively increases the gain in dark areas to produce heightened detail in those regions. It does this without blowing out correctly exposed parts of the image, while the camera's noise reduction technology ensures minimal noise in the adjusted areas.

Video clips with easy YouTube uploader
As well as taking fantastic still pictures the PowerShot A495 allows you to capture smooth 30fps VGA video clips. For fast and easy uploading of your clips to sharing websites like YouTube, Easy Web Upload software is included free in the box. A world of advantages with Canon technology

Shoot and share rich razor-sharp images - every time
The lens is the most important part of any imaging device and all Canon cameras incorporate lenses designed and manufactured by Canon to the most exacting standards - lenses based on over 60 years of experience for outstanding results.

The outstanding quality of Canon lenses is underscored by their use in most broadcast applications. For example programs like Coronation Street, Casualty and X Factor and nature documentaries like The Blue Planet and Life, as well as the majority of outside broadcasts in the UK, are all recorded using Canon's state-of-the-art broadcast lenses.

An advanced Optical Image Stabilizer keeps moving subjects in sharp focus. Meanwhile framing, reviewing and sharing shots is made easy with a bright 2.5" LCD screen, which incorporates a Night Display mode to aid visibility in low light and a selectable Grid Line display to help you compose the perfect shot.

Fast intelligent processing and superb image quality
Canon's DIGIC III processor provides fast response times plus superb image quality and colour reproduction. It also powers a suite of Face and Motion Detection technologies as well a Face Detection Self-Timer and automatic Red-eye Correction to give you better, more true-to-life people shots.

For sharp clear people shots you simply press the shutter button halfway down, and the camera uses Face Detection to automatically pinpoint up to nine faces in a scene, then adjusts focus, exposure, flash setting and white balance for optimal results with natural-looking skin tones. Motion Detection Technology uses changes in scene information and scene brightness to accurately identify subject motion. The optimal ISO level is then set automatically to minimise blur and maximise image quality.

A Face Detection Self-Timer also makes group photos and self-portraits easy. Once the shot has been set up, the camera records the number of faces detected in the frame when the shutter is depressed and the self timer started - it then waits for an extra face to get in the frame and adjusts focus and exposure before it takes the picture.

Automatic Red-eye Correction is available in both shooting and playback mode and accurately removes the red-eye effect caused by flash.

The Canon Powershot A495 is probably one of the most affordable compact digital cameras out there. A little bit bulky and encased in a full plastic body, including a plastic lens barrel, its design may not catch your eyes at first, but this pocket-sized, AA-battery powered digital compact will surprise you in many ways once you take it out of the box.

With a high-quality 2.5" LCD screen, composing shots are easy, and the auto scene detection function makes taking pictures a breeze. With the DIGIC III processor, the camera's software is able to detect up to 9 faces within a single frame quickly and adjusts the exposure accordingly so the subjects don't turn out overexposed or underexposed. Recovery time is amanzingly fast, again thanks to the DIGIC III processor normally only found in the more expensive IXUS models and Canon's DSLRs, so you can go on to shoot the next picture almost immmediately. The DIGIC III processor also makes sure that the pictures come out as clean and as noise free as possible. The A495 shoots from ISO 80 all the way up to ISO 1600, and with a small 1/2.3 inch sensor, keeping the images clean and noise free is no easy feat. The white balance adjustment is nearly perfect, with the camera producing almost natural colors even under flourescent lights. Test images have been uploaded under the customer's images section showing the color reproduction and noise performance of the camera.

Of course, the A495 is by no means a perfect little camera, with a few disappointing features here and there, and they are 1) a slow continuous burst, at a sluggish 0.95 frame per second 2) the night mode, which shoots at 2 megapixels only, and 3) a somewhat imperfect software which always keeps the camera's shutter speed just slow enough indoors to cause just a little blur to the images, even with the flash on. Therefore, it'll wise for you to keep the camera as steady as possible or use a tripod when you're shooting indoors.

Compared to the very closely priced Sony DSC-S930 and S950 released last year, the Canon is able to produce much cleaner and sharper pictures at any given ISO (even though there is no ISO 3200), and the quality of the images closely matches those of the very expensive Sony DSC-WX1 with EXMOR-R sensor, which comes as a surprise to me.

With its low price point and high quality images, the Canon Powershot A495 makes a perfect gift for any casual photographer, and for someone who's just getting into photography, it has enough features to become a back-up camera with its ability to use AA batteries straight out of a convenient store.

Bought for my daughter's Christmas present, this camera was an absolute gem for the first six weeks. She took it everywhere, getting some brilliant and amazing shots that only a teen can dream up! Given her interest in art, it also provided her with some great photos for her current projects. The quality of shot, from extreme close-up to panoramic, was excellent. I bought her two sets of rechargeables, knowing how these cameras consume them, and a case to protect it.
Yesterday the batteries popped out, and the plastic cover no longer resists the spring-loaded batteries within, no matter how much we jiggle it about. Not good enough, Canon. Don't you expect owners to change the batteries regularly? Why should I resort to taping up a six-week-old camera? It's going back.

This a great camera. It does what it says on the tin and is very easy to use. The price is competitive. Minor niggles: Once a picture has been taken, it takes quite a while to be ready for the next picture (2-3s). Even so, I would buy one again if I needed to.
