Powerful 8x optical zoom
The slim, compact body boasts a 28 mm wide-angle lens with an impressive 8x optical zoom capability, giving you the flexibility to frame your perfect shot. The wide-angle lens allows you to fit more in the frame, which is perfect for group shots, whereas the 8x optical zoom range enables you to get up close and capture all the detail, even when photographing distant subjects.
Incredibly sharp images whatever the situation
The PowerShot A4000 IS benefits from Canon’s Intelligent IS technology. Whether you’re shooting stills or movies, Intelligent IS automatically identifies the shooting situation and then selects the most appropriate type of optical image stabilization from 6 modes. For example, when tracking a moving object the camera will automatically select Panning IS which will make adjustments for vertical movement, ensuring that your subject is sharp and blur-free. However, when filming distant subjects with the zoom the camera will switch to Powered IS which provides a higher level of compensation for hand movement. This allows you to focus on framing the image you want, safe in the knowledge that the camera is working to eliminate as much camera shake as possible, even if you need to move with your scene.
Large, high-quality display
The PowerShot A4000 IS features a large 7.5 cm (3.0") LCD. This high quality 230k dot screen makes framing and reviewing images easy, even from difficult angles or in bright light.
Effortless shooting, superb results
When you're taking photographs, the only thing you want to think about is your subject, so Canon’s Smart Auto mode removes the worry of deciding which settings to select. It enables the camera to intelligently select the appropriate settings so you can concentrate on your subject.
In Smart Auto mode, Canon’s Advanced Scene Detection Technology automatically analyses shooting conditions – detecting people, distance, brightness, colour and movement information – then selects the perfect setting from 32 specially defined scenes. So whether you're photographing flowers, a captivating sunset or friends in the park you can be confident you're getting the perfect image.
Smart Auto is also more than just scene detection. It allows the camera to identify moving subjects to ensure the focus and exposure are always correct. For sharp close-ups the camera automatically switches to Macro mode and Smart Flash Exposure optimises exposure and flash controls to ensure your subject is perfectly lit whilst dark and light areas are accurately reproduced.
Additionally, you can switch to Smart Auto mode at any time with just one press of the Auto button. This means you can explore different modes and settings, safe in the knowledge that you can always jump straight back to the safety of Smart Auto mode in an instant, so you’ll never miss that crucial moment.
The PowerShot A4000 IS extremely easy to use, but for times when you need a little extra guidance there is an instant Help button. This provides one-click access to helpful information – it will guide you through the basic controls of the camera and explain more advanced features, such as ISO speed.

For moments that are best caught on video, the PowerShot A4000 IS offers the capability to record high-quality HD movies at 720p. Plus, a dedicated Movie Record button allows you to start filming instantly so you never miss a moment of the action. In many modes, the camera will even apply the settings from the stills mode you are currently, allowing you to capture movies with stunning creative effects such as Monochrome for traditional black and white scenes or Miniature Effect to transform ordinary scenes into miniature scale models.
The PowerShot A4000 IS compatible with a range of accessories including a stylish soft case (DCC-520), a high-power external flash unit (HF-DC2), an AC adapter kit (ACK-DC90) and a spare battery (NB-11L).

Battery life is great and its never been set to anything but full auto and it hasn't muffed a shot yet.
Excellent value for money for an everyday compact camera or even a backup on a more serious shoot.
After almost one year of using this machine i still don't like it.
I have understood, almost, all of the setting but the time it takes to take the picture is just a killer for this camera.
Remember the first cameras on the mobile phones that took "years" to take the picture, this is like that and if you take it on a tour either don't bother to take any pictures or all of then will be "just a second to late".
I'm now searching for a new camera that will not only have good picture quality but also is fast, like my mobile phone.
first week use:
with this machine is very dificult to get a stable image.
I have tried almost all modes and none gives me a image without blur.
on the other side it make very good movies :)
