Record fast-paced, full High Definition movies with stereo sound

For moments that are better caught on video, the PowerShot A3200 IS offers advanced video performance with the capability to record HD movies at 720p. Optical zoom is available during shooting, allowing speeds of up to 30 frames per second – and stereo sound guarantees clear, CD quality audio every time.

Effortless shooting – superb results

When you're taking pictures, the only thing you want to think about is your subject so, the effortless PowerShot A3200 IS offers two simple shooting modes – Smart Auto and Easy mode.

Smart Auto mode allows the camera to intelligently select the appropriate settings so you can concentrate on your subject. Advanced Scene Detection Technology automatically analyses shooting conditions – detecting people, distance, brightness, colour and movement information – then selects the one that offers the perfect setting from 32 specially defined scenes. So whether you're photographing flowers, a captivating sunset or friends in the park you can be confident you're getting the perfect image. Smart Auto is also more than just scene detection. With moving subjects Servo Auto Focus/Auto Exposure (AF/AE) is in continuous operation so your subjects are always in focus and correctly exposed. For close-ups the camera automatically switches to Macro mode for sharp shots while Smart Flash Exposure optimises exposure and flash controls to ensure your subject is perfectly lit whilst dark and light areas are accurately reproduced.

In Easy mode the camera automatically selects all the camera settings deactivating all buttons except those used for shooting – ideal for beginners or children.

Choice of manual shooting modes

Live View Control Mode

With the PowerShot A3200 IS, you have the option of selecting from a range of manual shooting modes that you can count on for exact focus no matter where your subject is in the frame. Simply select the mode you want and let the camera take care of everything else, ensuring breathtaking, exhilarating pictures even when shooting conditions are tough. There are also two photo effect modes: Super Vivid, which adds vibrant colours to photos for a dramatic result; and Poster Effect, which gives a retro feel to photos by creating a poster-like effect.

In addition, it offers a new mode, Live View Control Mode. As well as the automatic technology this camera offers, it also allows some basic manual control over visual effects with easy operations displayed onscreen.

More creative options – near or far

The 5x optical zoom allows for a wide range of framing options and lets you get up close and personal with far away objects. Camera shake can be an issue with zoom lenses but Canon's market-leading Dynamic Optical Image Stabilizer makes sure that you can capture steady shots throughout the zoom range.

Improved shots in tricky lighting situations

The PowerShot A3200 IS features a new Discreet Mode function which is designed for you to quickly and easily shoot in locations where flash photography is prohibited like art galleries and museums.

Intelligent Contrast Correction
Canon's i-Contrast feature automatically adjusts for the best image
Click here for a larger image

Alternatively, it also features a Low-Light mode for use in places such as parties and candlelit restaurants where you don't want to use a flash – automatically allowing you to capture atmospheric shots.

Meanwhile Canon's i-Contrast feature offers improved contrast and greater detail in tricky lighting conditions. Available in either shooting or playback mode, i-Contrast analyses the exposure, dynamic range and other image characteristics of a shot then adaptively increases the contrast in dark areas to produce heightened detail in those regions. It does this without blowing out correctly exposed parts of the image, while the camera's noise reduction technology ensures minimal noise in the adjusted areas.

Power efficient with quick recharge

The PowerShot A3200 IS runs off an intelligent rechargeable Li-ion battery that will give you hours of shooting pleasure and is quick and easy to recharge.

Video clips with easy YouTube™ uploader

As well as taking fantastic still pictures the PowerShot A3200 IS allows you to capture smooth 30fps VGA video clips. For fast and easy uploading of your clips to sharing websites like YouTube™, Easy Web Upload software (PIXELA) is included free in the box. This displays your SD clips and can store your YouTube™ login details, so you can just select your clip and upload with one click.

Shoot with confidence

Easy Hints & Tips provides onscreen guidance so even beginners can operate the camera with confidence right from the box. Menu explanations are always easy to understand and when settings are changed the relevant icon displays in an easy-to-see orange colour delivering a sophisticated and pleasant operating experience.

Filing options

Organising your photos is now even easier thanks to the PowerShot A3200 IS's filing options. Auto Category sorts images into categories depending on each shooting condition, while My Category allows you to tag images to different categories using your own criteria e.g. people, scenery or events.

Fast, intelligent processing and superb image quality

Face Detection Technology
Face Detection Technology locates faces in a shot and automatically adjusts for natural skin tones

With Face Detection, up to 35 faces can be detected in each shot whilst focus, exposure, flash setting and white balance are all automatically adjusted for optimal results with natural-looking skin tones. Face Select & Track allows a single face in a crowd to be selected and tracked as the main subject while a Face Detection Self-Timer also makes group photos and self-portraits easy. Once the shot is set up, the shutter pressed and the self-timer starts the camera records the number of faces detected in the frame. It then waits for an extra face to join the frame and adjusts focus and exposure before it takes the picture.

Motion Detection Technology uses changes in scene information and scene brightness to accurately identify subject motion. The optimal ISO level is then set automatically to minimise blur and maximise image quality.

Automatic Red-Eye Correction is available in both shooting and playback mode and accurately removes the red-eye effect caused by the flash.

Rich razor-sharp images – every time

The lens is the most important part of any imaging device and all Canon cameras incorporate lenses designed and manufactured by Canon to the most exacting standards – lenses based on over 70 years of experience.

The outstanding quality of Canon lenses is underscored by their use in most broadcast applications. For example programmes like Coronation Street, Casualty and X Factor, nature documentaries like The Blue Planet and Life, as well as the majority of outside broadcasts in the UK, are all recorded using Canon's state-of-the-art broadcast lenses.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very acceptable point and shoot camera 5 May 2011

I bought a Canon SX130 IS prior to this one. I was very surprised at the ease of use and quality of images, however the batteries lasted all but 20 photos I think so I replaced it with this. So far, the battery life is as to be expected of a lithium rechargeable and I have taken quite a few photos and only had to recharge it once.

It does not have as many presets as the SX130 but has enough for what the average person would use a point-and-shoot pocket camera for. Size wise, I was quite surprised at how small it was, and it took a bit of getting to used to in my hand. I found it fiddly to begin with but it grew on me. Quick and easy to set up, quick to respond though, the shutter speed could be a little quicker I think. I point, it focuses and as I click to take the picture my 2 year old gets fed of up saying cheese and moves. 7/10 I end up with a blur instead of a decent photo of her. So I would not suggest that this is a good camera for snapping something that moves too quickly or does not have the patience of a saint!

On the whole, the images are clear and bright enough. All the auto settings seem to work well. Digital zoom not bad but not entirely clear. It is what is it is. A small, point and shoot, fun to use camera. Not intended for major photography but a good all rounder and most importantly, the battery lasts a fair while. Nothing worse than running out of power every few shots. A good camera for taking on holiday, carrying around with you on a night out or out and about because of its size and ease of use.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for price 6 May 2011

Let me start by covering the negatives

Picture quality Ok, not as good as my 10mp SX10 IS - but see what happened below...!!!
    Too many features..hey?
    LCD not good in sunlight
    Pictures a little dark

Okay, that is out of the way.

Too many features...yes, this is a small camera which I purchased so that on holiday I do not have to carry a bulky camera. I do not agree with some reviews (not here) that it isn't very compact...well any smaller and you will have a whole load of problems handling it. The size is fine. But, as I said, too many features. You buy a camera like this for snap shots, you buy an SLR or one like the SX10IS for more composed pictures. So there is no real need for 32 scene types or a range of gizmo settings (toy camera what is THAT? Fish eye?)!! Canon should have kept it basic, yes, there is an idiot button that disables most things, but they should have provided just basic variations to enable the camera to be used in general snapshot situations.

14mp sounds good, whether this has been done to compensate for the small lens I do not know, or whether it is because the market demands, but my SX10IS at 10mp gives sharper clearer pictures.

Hd film, nice, but if you are serious about HD movies, get a dedicated camcorder, this just gives you a slightly better definition video as opposed to VGA.

So a few moans, not the greatest thing around, and herin lies my problem. It is all well and good saying go to a camera shop and try out the cameras, but you cannot try before you buy, unless a shop is willing to let you take a swathe of pictures, upload them to their PC for you to compare, then you need to rely on the professional reviewer (always critical) or people like us, the users.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pocket size Canon 14 Jun 2011

I bought this as a backup camera to my Canon DSLR for use when the large camera was impractical.
It is a very good camera for the price. Photographs and video are good quality.
The controls are easy to learn. It would have been nice to shoot RAW but at this price I can't grumble.

    Colour Name:Aqua
My 16 year old daughter wanted this metal finished camera as she fancied the pink version, but when she saw them she opted for the more understated aqua colour [the colour goes over the back as well]. My daughter finds my old Panasonic FZ-28 18x zoom bridge camera too bulky when travelling light, so she got this Canon Powershot A3200 IS as a cheap smaller pocket/handbag point and shoot camera for decent photo stills and the odd short video. This Canon A3200 has a useful 28mm wide angle to 5x zoom, granted with a silly 4320 x 3240 number of 14.1 megapixels on the CCD [the extra pixels are pretty much just noise at high mag over an 8MP camera] This camera is 95 x 24 x 57 mm [high], and weighs 149 g [so it's small not miniscule]. There's a simple scene/options selector wheel on top and a 2.7" screen on the back with the usual menu/display/play buttons and cross keypad.

Regarding manual control, there's some hidden under P mode, but its quicker to select 'smart auto' or 'easy [talk through text]' and start shooting. There are alternative scene options: Portrait, Landscape, Kids & Pets, Smart Shutter (detects 'Smile, Wink Self-Timer, and FaceSelf-Timer'), Low Light (3.5MP), Beach, Foliage, Snow, Fireworks, Long Shutter) with 'Creative Filters' (Fish-eye Effect, Miniature Effect, Toy Camera Effect, Monochrome, Super Vivid, Poster Effect), auto-red-eye, Discreet, and a Movie mode [720 HD]. There's also optical image stabilisation for both movie and stills with ISO Sensitivity 80 [OK] to 1600 [very fuzzy, but at least you get a picture of sorts in dim light]. There's also the discreet mode with all sounds, flash etc.. switched off [which you could select manually].
