I bought this printer solely for printing architectural drawings on A3 and as I'm continuing to use my old A4 printer for photo and general printing, I can't yet comment on its photo printing capabilities. I didn't need or want an all-singing-all-dancing multi-functional beast, just a printer which had to fit in a relatively small space. Without the paper feed or output tray extended, this printer is very compact (measuring 54cm wide x 16cm high x 30 cm deep) but with the paper feed fully extended it needs an additional 20 cm depth and about 30 cm height while the front output tray extends about 32cm from the front.

Although I've only used it for line drawings and text, the print is clear and sharp, the printer is fast and quiet and the paper alignment is spot-on. I've done a dozen or so drawings so far and the usual half-filled manufacturer supplied ink cartridges haven't even registered the usage. Needless to say, I'd expect it to be pretty thirsty printing high quality colour images but then it's bound to be.

The printer feels sturdy and well built, the driver & supporting software installation was a breeze (causing no conflicts with my other Canon Pixma printer) and replacement ink cartridges aren't prohibitively expensive so all-in-all this printer is perfect for my purposes. Note, however, that there is no USB cable supplied but that's not a major problem. When my other printer gives up the ghost I'll use this one for all of my general A4 printing as well as the A3 drawings so I'll be able to give a more rounded review of its other capabilities.

When my excellent old Epsom Stylus Photoprinter (7 cartridge machine) had to be replaced due only to the lack of Windows 7 drivers, I decided to go for a machine capable of A3 prints. Although considerably cheaper than my old Epsom, I read enough positive reviews to convince me that the technology had progressed and this printer would more than match my Epsom. Well I confirm that it does indeed produce excellent vibrant prints, though the quality of the paper is always a huge factor. The Pixma produces quality prints right up to the edges, even when printing A3 borderless pictures.

I also love the look of the printer - a glossy piano black minimalist box (when closed). Fitting cartridges could not be easier, and it has a greater little feature of lighting up an LED over the cartridge which needs replacing - it just makes life easy.

I do have a couple of issues with this printer. First of all, it seems to take forever from sending an image to the printer, to the actual printing process starting. This is not a big problem but it does niggle when you are in a hurry. A bigger concern is the size of the cartridges which look no more than half the size of my old Epsom ones. Why use such small cartridges on a printer designed to make A3 sized ink heavy prints? I should add that I have a separate printer for documents so as to avoid using up ink. I think this coupled with the fact that I don't print photos daily, may mean that even more ink is getting used as the printer goes through its head cleaning operations preparing to print. At the end of the day, I seem to be replacing the cartridges 3 or 4 times more frequently than my old printer, so the running costs are far higher.

So to summarise I would say that this printer will give you excellent A3 prints, but they will cost you an arm and a leg.

Great piece of kit. I print mainly financial reports however my daughter needed a printer for colour photographs of her work and this fits the bill. It's economical neat and compact and very easy to operate. I haven't purchased Canons inks so I cannot say if it's economical from that point of view I found that the inks sold by "Inkredible" were very inexpensive and the print quality is very good.It does the job for us.
