Incredible quality and detail in seconds

Thanks to the 1 picolitre ink droplets from Canon's class-leading FINE (Full-photolithography Inkjet Nozzle Engineering) print engine which delivers an astonishing resolution of 9600 x 2400 dpi, the PIXMA iX6650 produces vivid, detailed photos and the crispest text. It can print a 10 x 15cm (4 x 6") borderless photograph in 36 seconds, and an A3+ borderless photograph in 120 seconds, giving you superior photo-lab quality output at incredible speed.

The PIXMA iX6550’s document print speeds are also impressive - 11.3 IPM* in black and white or 8.8 IPM* in colour.

Efficient 5 Single Ink System

Canon's High Performance 5 Single Ink System includes two blacks - one for printing crisp laser sharp text, the other to give strong saturated blacks in photos - delivering exceptional quality. The Single Ink System also means that when one colour runs out you only replace that ink tank instead of replacing an entire multi-coloured cartridge and wasting the other unused ink.

Stylish, compact and tidy

The sleek and stylish PIXMA iX6550 is incredibly compact for an A3+ printer. It is only 12cm wider than the equivalent A4 model, so it requires noticeably less desk space than you would expect of an A3+ model. Additionally, both the power cable and USB port are recessed inside the printer so you can push the machine right back against the wall, saving space and keeping everything neat and tidy.

Beautiful, long-lasting photos

You can keep your precious photos bright and vibrant with the Canon ChromaLife100+ system. This unique combination of enhanced FINE print head technology and genuine Canon Chromalife 100+ inks with selected Canon photo papers lets you create beautiful photos that will last up to 300 years when stored in an archival-quality photo album.

To achieve the 9600 x 2400 dpi colour resolution, Canon Full-photolithography Inkjet Nozzle Engineering (FINE) uses a patented print head with high precision nozzles, ejecting ink droplets as small as 1 picolitre in size (the smaller the ink drop the better quality the image).

*Printing speeds explained: Canon measures its printing speeds in IPM (Images Per Minute). IPM is a new ISO speed testing standard, approved by the International Standards Organisation in March 2009. PPM (Page Per Minute), used by some manufacturers, is not a standard for inkjet printers. Every printer manufacturer has their own ‘test pages’ that are used to test speed and give vastly different results. The new ISO standard sets standardised ‘test pages’ that are to be used by any manufacturer measuring their speed in IPM, allowing comparable results across inkjet brands.

**Full HD Movie Print - Only compatible with Canon Digital Still Compact and Digital SLR cameras.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning A3 Prints on canvas paper 28 Jun 2011
Having just retired my Epson Photo Ex A3 printer which had given superb reliable service, I looked long and hard for a quality replacement. I read all the reviews and despite my loyalty to Epson in the past, (I also own an Epson Stylus sx525WD, which is a quality photo printer up to A4), I decided to listen to the reviews and purchase the Canon Pixma ix6550. The results all round are worthy of a SIX STAR rating. I use canvas paper a lot for A3 photo printing, these results are stunning and look like works of art rather than photo prints, with colours faithfully reproduced. The ink usage is also pleasing it is far more economic than my other printers and replacements more reasonably priced. If your are looking for an A3 printer look no further, at this price it's a snip!

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy A3 Printing! 17 May 2011
I bought this printer from Amazon as soon as it was available - this seemed a very reasonable price to allow me to produce A3 prints.
It duly arrived (earlier than advised)taken out of the packaging, wired up...and found to be faulty. However I returned it on a Tuesday to Amazon and a replacement arrived on the Friday, so great service from Amazon!
Anyway I wanted a photo printer that would simply, well, print. I didn't need a scanner, fax, copier or wi-fi connectivity. And this fits the bill; it prints..and even A3 prints come out faster than I would have anticipated.
I took the precaution of buying some dedicated Canon glossy paper as it always seems to work better than cheaper generic brands and the results I've had so far are really first class!
Frankly most of my photos are printed in A4 format but if you do want/need A3 prints either regularly or more infrequently, this is a good cost-effective printer and you can't really go far wrong with Canon products.
Some time ago my company bought an A3 printer for our office at a price of over £500 and although not an expert, I see no discernible difference in the quality of prints this more expensive printer produces, compared with the iX6550.

5.0 out of 5 stars Magnificent! 10 April 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase
I've had my eye on this printer since it first came out but dithered for quite a while. Occasionally Amazon drop the price to £149.99 which they did about two months ago. I had a £10.00 Amazon voucher burning a hole so for 139.99, I jumped right in and I've not regretted it! The cartridges that came with the machine did not seem to last very long but we seasoned pc buffs know all about the hows & whys of that! (Lol).
The two black carts, however are still about 50% full. Never being one for the overpriced "original" cartridges and its accompanying nonsense, I plumped for one of the CISS refillable 5 cartridge systems. These you can get at City Ink Express and save yourself a bomb! I have to say I can see no discernable difference in the quality of my prints. Now, to get things right you have to match your printer with the paper you are using and this can be a bit of a headache. I ordered Satin pearl premium 280g, available here on Amazon. If you order from Photo paper direct and ask at the time of ordering they will send you a software profile for this printer and it works a treat! The prints it produces are superb! I also have some cheapo paper from Lidl, (bought for my Epson SX215), and after fiddling for a bit, I set the profile to PT1 and it works very well indeed!
I have to say that this printer produces almost identically what you see on your monitor screen. A first for me! I know two months is not a long time to review a printer so I hope you don't think I'm being a bit previous. I think all the other reviews speak for themselves. A first class machine.

I think perhaps should mention one small niggle. Sometimes it seems to take an age to warm up and settle down which doesn't matter too much unless you are in a hurry.

4.0 out of 5 stars Canon Pixma iX6550 26 Sep 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase
Make no mistake, this is a great printer. As others have said, to get better A3+ prints you will have to spend at least twice as much.

However, as with most of these lower-medium cost Canon inkjets, you pay through the nose for the Canon genuine ink cartridges with a full set in most stores costing around £50. Shop around and you can bring the price down to under £40.

Using the genuine Canon cartridges supplied with the printer, I printed off five A3 photos at standard picture quality and half a dozen A3 images on plain paper (copies of 1911 census returns). The prints appeared dark and contrasty compared to my photos viewed on screen, but colour balance was pretty good and it was easy to adjust the results to near perfection using Adobe Lightroom to create a preset which I can use prior to printing. HOWEVER....already some of the ink levels had dropped to near half, and I could tell at this early stage the way this was heading...... potentially burning a hole in my pocket and hence only four stars for this product review.

Looking to the longer term, I have purchased a CISS (continuous ink supply system) for this printer and having used them regularly for a fortnight the combination is a five-star knockout. Whilst not directly relevant to the performance of the iX6550, I'd say it's an option to consider if you're planning on doing more than a handful of large prints per month, although it probably invalidates the Canon guarantee. Others of a fiscally-frugal but less adventurous nature may choose to use compatible cartridges, a lot cheaper than the Canon originals, although these too may invalidate the guarantee and may require some adjustment to colour balance etc.
