Incredible quality and detail in seconds

Thanks to the 2 picolitre ink droplets from Canon's class-leading FINE (Full-photolithography Inkjet Nozzle Engineering) print engine which delivers a fantastic resolution of 4800 x 1200 dpi, the PIXMA MX420 produces vivid, detailed photos and the crispest text. It can print a 10 x 15cm (4 x 6") borderless photograph in 42 seconds, giving you photo-lab quality output at incredible speed.

The PIXMA MX420 also has very fast document print speeds - 8.7 IPM† in black and white or 5.0 IPM† in colour. Plus, Quick Start allows almost instant operation the moment the power is switched on, meaning you never waste time waiting for the PIXMA MX420 to ‘warm up’.

Simple, user-friendly interface

The carefully designed operation panel offers a clear layout with controls arranged from left to right, plus it makes operation simple and user-friendly by grouping keys by function.

Thanks to a PictBridge connection you can also conveniently print photos directly from your digital camera, camcorder or camera phone - the large 6.2cm, TFT display screen lets you easily view, select and edit your images for simple computer-free printing.

Memory card support

The built-in memory card slots allow you to print and scan to or from all popular memory cards. This means that photos can be printed directly from the card so you don’t need a PC. The following cards are supported: USB Flash Memory, CompactFlash, Microdrive, Memory Stick, Memory Stick Pro, Memory Stick Duo, Memory Stick PRO Duo, SD Memory Card, SDHC Memory Card, MultiMedia Card (Ver4.1), and MultiMedia Card Plus (Ver4.1). xD-PictureCard*, xD-PictureCard Type M*, xD-PictureCard Type H*, Memory Stick Micro*, RS-MMC *, MMCmobile Card*, mini SD Card*, micro SD*, mini SDHC Card* and micro SDHC*.

Print from any computer in the office

You can print to the PIXMA MX420 wirelessly from any Wi-Fi enabled computer and its improved Wi-Fi support (Wi-Fi b/g/n CERTIFIED) enables more efficient Wi-Fi connectivity. Set up is easy from the menu screen and the PIXMA automatically searches for the wireless connection. The PIXMA MX420 also includes built-in Ethernet - a wired LAN interface that lets you connect seamlessly to an office network, so all the computers connected can share the power of PIXMA.

Printing from Smartphones

You can take full advantage of Canon's fantastic Wi-Fi printing technology to unlock, print and share your stored images right on the spot. Simply download the free Canon Easy-PhotoPrint App from the iTunes® App Store or Android Market and you can quickly and easily print your photos wirelessly from compatible iPhone®, iPod® touch or Android devices.

Fully Integrated ADF (Auto Document Feeder)

The PIXMA MX420's built-in fully integrated 30-sheet ADF allows batch copying, scanning or faxing of documents without having to load them one at a time. Alternatively, when scanning in several documents separately on the flatbed, Reserve Copy allows you to scan the next document whilst waiting for the first to be processed.

Because the ADF is fully integrated it lies flush with the body of the printer, meaning it's easier to fit into tight spots. A sloping front panel also allows for easy scanning and copying of over-sized and thick objects like books and folders.

User friendly printing

The PIXMA MX420 features a self-operating output tray - this automatically opens when printing or copying so you can print from anywhere in your home or office without having to get up to open the output tray yourself.

Automatically scans just about anything

Premium quality 2400 dpi scanning is quick, simple and easy with the integral Auto Scan Mode. It detects your original, e.g. photo, business card or letter, then automatically scans and saves the image with the appropriate settings, all without any prompt from you. You can also scan directly to a USB stick or memory card to quickly share scanned files and with the included Canon MP Navigator EX software you can convert hard-copy documents to searchable PDFs and add password protection.

High speed fax

The Super G3 Fax is fast and reliable. You can use it as a conventional fax or send faxes directly from your PC without printing the document first. It also features 20 coded speed dials and 50 page fax memory for increased efficiency. The built-in USB port and memory card slot also mean you can save faxes or scanned documents directly to an external storage device without the need for a computer.

Auto Photo and Auto Document Fix

These built-in technologies automatically optimise the quality of photos and documents.

Based on Canon's market-leading intelligent camera technology, Auto Photo Fix II technology with Red-Eye Removal and Multi-zone Exposure Correction is perfect for your home photo lab as it automatically fixes your photos at the printer, giving you flawless results without the need for a computer. It categorises your images into one of five types - Portrait, Scenery, Night Scenery, Snapshot with Scenery, and Snapshot with Night Scenery - then applies optimal image and exposure correction. This means that unexposed areas of the photo will be optimised area by area and faces that are backlit and under-exposed will automatically be brightened with correct colour cast to help ensure more accurate skin tones for beautiful images.

Auto Document Fix optimises the quality of scanned documents in much the same way, area by area. It enhances the intensity and clarity of text, smoothes dots and maintains contrast and tone for images, as well as reducing show through for background areas.

Stylish, compact and tidy

As well as a new, sleek, compact design, both the power cable and USB port are recessed inside the printer so you can push the machine right back against the wall, saving space and keeping everything neat and tidy.

†Printing speeds explained: Canon measures its printing speeds in IPM (Images Per Minute). IPM is a new ISO speed testing standard, approved by the International Standards Organisation in March 2009. PPM (Page Per Minute), used by some manufacturers, is not a standard for inkjet printers. Every printer manufacturer has their own ‘test pages’ that are used to test speed and give vastly different results. The new ISO standard sets standardised ‘test pages’ that are to be used by any manufacturer measuring their speed in IPM, allowing comparable results across inkjet brands.

*Using required adaptor, available separately.

**Full HD Movie Print - Only compatible with Canon Digital Still Compact and Digital SLR cameras.

My old Canon printer bit the dust a month or two ago after a long and trouble free life. I needed a printer that everyone in the house could use - without coming into my studio and unplugging mine - so I plumped for this one.
Normally I just buy the cheapest printer, but this time I'm glad I spent a little more to get this brilliant piece of gear.
It is a doddle to set up (I have BT vision wireless) and we have 1 Mac and 3 PCs in the house all happily sending stuff to this printer with no issues or problems.
I would advise you to read the destructions and also to install the software on the CD to the first computer you come to - as this will ensure that everything else is smooth.
On subsequent computers you just go to the printer list, select it and install The Mac just saw it all by itself and loaded up the drivers by itself.
The print quality is very good indeed, and it also doubles as a fax machine, copier and scanner - plus there is a card slot at the front to print from all those memory cards you have been hoarding!

Excellent printer 21 July 2011
Printer received today, already completed a few prints including black and white and photo printing onto glossy paper.

The printer itself is a really neat little device, all of its external trays etc fold into itself so it can be completely self contained. Nice piano black finish with very sci-fi blue LEDs. LCD screen is small but displays everything clearly.

Setup onto a wireless LAN was quick and painless. Power cable was a little short, so we will need an extension cable to sort that I think. but it was installed onto two PCs using the supplied disc without any real drama.

Black and white printing was fast, very accurate and the blacks certainly appeared a 'true' black.

Photo printing, fantastic colour reproduction, reasonably quick, lovely finish. The only issue with this was the borderless printing which seemed to mess up the dimensions (cropping the bottom a little, still had a border on the sides). I imagine that I could fix this with a little tweaking though, so its probably me and not the printer at fault here.

This was printed at an excellent quality without even having to align the print heads!

Altogether an excellent printer, well worth the money! lets see how economical the cartridges are now!

I have given the PIXMA MX420 about two months to settle in before writing this review.

I have previously had two Epson printers (the latter of the 2 being an all-in-one) which have given excellent print quality and output, let down only by the rather eccentric print head system (both frustrating and very expensive in terms of cost of print cartridges and paying for repairs due to blockages in the print heads). My HP printers have been functional and efficient but without great print quality.

Consequently I thought I would give the Canon a try. (I still have a Canon portable printer from many years ago, and still use it when on the move). Like my Epson and HP, the all-in-one element has a document feed so that in addition to the use of the flat bed for scanning, longer documents can be put into the feed and left to get on with it.

The Canon as a printer is fine to look at and, in the main, has a solid feel to it. I found absolutely no problems in set-up and installation (XP Pro SP3) and thus full marks for that.

I have not bothered with the fax set up as I very rarely use fax and have a fax-phone for that purpose. Likewise, most people who have fax also have email, or access to it, where print quality is much superior and is in colour. Thus no comments on installation or use of fax.

The print speed of the Canon is very slightly on the slow side, but as a plus is quiet - important when printers sit next to me in my home office. The print quality is very adequate for letters and documents, but to my mind is dull with a colour caste, and not really acceptable for photo-printing save for 'snaps'.

Scanning is frankly very poor. The quality of the scanned image is good, but the scanner itself and the scanning process is quite slow. Worse, the user is given next to no control over the scan itself, whether as to scan quality (dpi), colour/greyscale or B and W. There seem to be no multi-TIFs or pdfs and the system is set up in such a way as to cause the user maximum aggravation. Review and editing of scanned pictures does not seem to be available. This was one area in which the Epson triumphed. In truth, the scanning software bundled with the Canon is totally inadequate and I am now considering setting up my old dedicated scanner.

Overall, a reasonable printer let down by some inadequacies and particularly disappointing if you do any quantity of scanning.
