Bought this to print my own Photo Art Prints for gallery exhibitions, photography competition entries and for resale. Being a professional designer and Mac user I've never been too impressed with Epson printers, either consumer or professional grade, and always found them to be thirsty on ink and easily cloggupable.
This, however, ticks all the boxes. However I quickly discovered it fell foul of 'Epson snobbery' that seems to have infiltrated most camera clubs nowadays, in so much that people assume because it's not an Epson it's not up to the job.
Which of course is a load of nonsense. This printer outputs amazing black and whites and colour prints in equal measure, and the quality of my prints have been outstanding (being a print-based graphic designer and photographer my demands are very high).
I've had my printer around 6 months, and on first use got around 30 A3 prints and about 20 A4s (mixture of black and white and full colour) before I had to swap a cartridge. So far I've only replaced 2 cartridges, but expect that to increase when I start using my printer more frequently again in the autumn.
On the downside the manual is dreadful - The lack of a PDF version was very annoying, as I was hoping to load that onto my iPad for easy reference. Thankfully I found one on the internet after a bit of searching so all is well. Another downside is the inks are pretty much impossible to get hold of on the high street (shops sell most Canon inks but not the Lucia Inks for the 9500 - I can't even buy them in my local Jessops store or PC World/Staples! VERY ANNOYING). But you can pick them up for around £[] each here on Amazon - not ideal for last-minute deadlines, but better than nothing.
There's not a great range of papers available from Canon, but Hahnemuhle supply the top-end canon paper, so if you want quality Gallery/Museum paper for your prints then look no further. However I've had excellent results using Epson paper available on the high street.
The printer is solidly built and very quiet in use (I use mine in my home studio, but being quite large keep it in the bedroom connected to my laptop - I have an 18month old daughter and this printer is quiet enough to use even when she's sleeping in her cot). It's easy to operate, and it works well with Mac OSX Leopard and photoshop CS3. The printing options are a bit limited (border, no border etc) so if you want to print something out a specific custom size its limiting, but then this is designed to print professional photos at A4 or A3 size, so if you're after a more adaptable printer for everyday/office use then you're better off looking elsewhere.
I'd recommend this printer to anyone serious about photography, professionals and amateurs alike.
